Coordinating action in technology-supported shared tasks: Virtual pointing as a situated practice for mobilizing a response

2021

Drawing on recordings of remote screen-based work meetings in Finland, this conversation analytic study investigates interactive properties of mouse cursor movements in technology-mediated shared tasks. The article illustrates how participants rely on features afforded by the input device in ways that divert from its pre-designed functions to accomplish virtual pointing gestures. These gestures serve as an organizational resource in the precursory phase of action, i.e. when a next on-screen action is observably made relevant. In this sequential environment, pointing by means of the tool is a collaborative resource: an embodied practice for sustaining co-orientation and advancing the sequent…

La porte Peyrine à Châteauponsac (Haute-Vienne) : une possible fortification de l’Antiquité tardive inédite ?

2019

1° In Limousin, our knowledge of ancient monumentalfuneral architecture has been given a new impetus forresearch during the past fifteen years thanks to the inventoryof large-stone blocks reused in civil and religious constructionsor even in later funeral arrangements.2° It is from this standpoint that the Châteauponsac sitehas been included where, in an urban landscape, a largeconcentration of examples of ancient architecture areconserved. Among the major facilities preserving in theirelevations a large number of these re-used stones is includedthe ancient Saint-Thyrse abbey church and the Porte Peyrine ,which unlike the neighbouring religious building, has so farbeen the subject of no spe…

Mathematical monuments in Finland

2021

With “mathematical monuments” we mean either monuments for famous mathematicians and their achievements or works of art representing mathematical objects in public places. We present a panoply of such monuments in Finland for the purposes of the mathematical tourist visiting our country. As we are interested in symbolic representations of science, we take a broad view of the notion of “monument” and take into account also some minor artefacts, such as portraits, medals and stamps, and other semiotic signs, such as street names and commemorative plates, illustrating some highlights of the history of mathematics in Finland. La chiesa di Santa Maria di Campogrosso ad Altavilla Milicia (Palermo), i ruderi di un monumento normanno tra abbandono, restauri e studi archeologici

2017

The church of Santa Maria di Campogrosso, long abandoned, is now a ruin. However, this church represents an important historical and architectural witness to the presence of “basiliani” monks in eastern Sicily, much less documented than the western Sicily’s one. Moreover, the story of this monument is linked to a very important episode, the Norman conquest of Sicily with the birth of the so-called "arabo-normanna" architecture. The essay describes the history of the church between abandonment, restoration and archaeological studies until the present.

The contribution of AI to enhance understanding of Cultural Heritage.

2013

The Artificial Intelligence & Cultural Heritage (AI & CH) working group was born in 1999 with the aim at promoting various scientific activities to increase a more active collaboration between the sectors of cultural assets and artificial intelligence. The many events (workshops and schools) organized over the years have shown the validity of this group for exchanging ideas and gathering researchers and practitioners from different fields. New applications of informatics and artificial intelligence have provided the opportunity to produce innovative tools for documenting, managing and communicating cultural heritage. For this anniversary we intend to show how some of the most important meth…

Rocking behaviour of multi-block columns subjected to pulse-typeground motion accelerations

2016

Ancient columns, made with a variety of materials such as marble, granite, stone or masonry are an important part of theEuropean cultural heritage. In particular columns of ancient temples in Greece and Sicily which support only the architrave arecharacterized by small axial load values. This feature together with the slenderness typical of these structural members clearlyhighlights as the evaluation of the rocking behaviour is a key aspect of their safety assessment and maintenance. It has to be notedthat the rocking response of rectangular cross-sectional columns modelled as monolithic rigid elements, has been widely investigatedsince the first theoretical study carried out by Housner (19…

Downfall of the domestic gods. A Discovery of Statues in a 3rd-century House in Entrains-sur-Nohain (Burgundy, France)

2021

Several stone statuettes of domestic gods have been discovered in houses in the Roman city of Intaranum, now Entrains (Nièvre), located in the north of the Aeduii territory. During an excavation carried out by INRAP in 2014-2015 in the northern part of the city, nine new statuettes were unearthed, some intact or barely damaged. The statuettes are of feminine or masculine deities, who sit and hold their knees, symbolising material welfare. Some statuettes come from in previously identified workshops. The data from both earlier and more recent excavations converge to date most of the statuettes to the 2nd half of the 2nd century CE. Abandoned during Late Antiquity, some of these artefacts wer…

Geoarchaeological evidence for the abandonment of the Roman baths at Thermae Himerae

2020
