Dyes of a Shadow Theatre: Investigating Tholu Bommalu Indian Puppets through a Highly Sensitive Multi-Spectroscopic Approach
2021
Tholu Bommalu are typical leather puppets of the traditional Indian shadow theatre. Two of these objects are part of a collection in the International Puppets Museum “Antonio Pasqualino” (Palermo, Sicily, Italy), which can count on one hundred-seventy-three of artifacts. These Indian puppets were investigated to obtain information related to the use of dyes for their manufacturing through a multi-technical approach exploiting the combination of highly sensitive spectroscopic techniques. Wet cotton stubbons were used to entrap small particles of dyes on the fibers from the art objects for the consequent analyses. Visible Light Micro-Reflectance spectroscopy was employed for the preliminary i…
Early Jurassic (Sinemurian) gastropods from the Lusitanian Basin (west of Portugal)
2020
The Sinemurian gastropod specimens herein studied come from two sources: from museum collections and from samplings in field. The study of the Sinemurian gastropod specimens housed in the collections of the Museu Geológico (Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia), Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência (University of Lisbon), Museu da Ciência (University of Coimbra) and of the Museu de História Natural e da Ciência (University of Porto), has allowed the systematic and taxonomical update of this material. These specimens come mostly from Sinemurian outcrops in S. Pedro de Moel area and Coimbra region, and were collected by Paul Choffat and collaborators in the geological field w…
2010
As a great many technical operations are involved in the creation of pottery, it is often difficult to discover precisely in what order they were used in the "chaînes opératoires". The determination of the state of drying is an essential step in rediscovering the archaeological chaîne opératoire. An experimental method is developed to identify burnishing and polishing techniques. The states of drying can be identified by the study of experimental trace types and surface aspects. Precise differenciation on archaeological sherds between burnishing and polishing techniques then becomes possible. The development of this method for other techniques will undoubtedly increase the quality and preci…
La Tene human burial and animal deposit at Varennes-sur-Seine (Seine-et-Marne)
2002
An adolescent was buried at the bottom of a large irregular shaped pit The body that had been lain on one side, legs tucked under, was in the centre of a ring of stones and was covered by a deposit of a dog and four horses of which two were foals and two were young adults. A thick layer of sand and a second deposit of three horses and a dog covered this first deposit. The adolescent skull had been broken and perforated which adds to the distinctiveness of this burial. Most of the horses had been skinned and the tendons had been removed. Also the four legs of one of the horses in the top deposit had been removed. With no datable finds the radiocarbon analysis gives a date corresponding to th…
Occitanie, Haute-Garonne, Grenade, Le Castelet
2019

2016
The archaeological excavation undertaken in 2006 by the Institut national de recherches archéologiques preventives (Inrap) at the site “Le Clos des Tourelles” in Hombourg-Budange (Moselle, France) unearthed a Gallo-Roman tilery. It situated close to a medieval site, the initial target of the excavation project. The time span of the Gallo-Roman occupation cannot be stated with accuracy; only its abandonment can be dated to be later than 250 AD. The remains of the tilery are assembling a kiln, drains, a hall, a well, and, among other features, a small building. The plan and arrangement of the different features are représenting the whole working process of the tile production and, additionall…
