Millstone coastal quarries of the Mediterranean: A new class of sea level indicator

The coasts of Italy still preserve several remnants of coastal quarries built in antiquity, that now provide insights into the intervening sea-level changes occurred during the last millennia. In this paper, we show and discuss a new class of sea level indicator consisting of millstones carved along the rocky coast of southern Italy since 2500 BP, that are currently submerged. They were extracted from beachrocks, sandstones or similar sedimentary rocks, easier for carving by ancient carving tools. Nella ricchissima letteratura sulla Colonna Traiana, un filone di ricerca non ancora esplorato in tutte le sue potenzialità è lo studio approfondito degli schemi iconografici di origine greca rifluiti nella narrazione figurata delle guerre daciche. Sono formule che erano da tempo patrimonio comune degli artisti romani, con una lunga storia di riprese e adattamenti. Tis contribution focuses on a distinctive kind of pottery decoration, geometric in nature and characterised by multiple parallel line incisions and/or impressions obtained before fring by means of a comb-like toothed tool operating on the potter’s wheel; therefore, in the archaeological literature it is usually referred to as “Comb-incised Ware” or, more generally, “Combed Ware”.

In this paper will be described the ceramic found in the site Contrada Case Romane in the island of Marettimo. On this site a monastic community was founded in the end of the 5th century. This settlement was destroyed in the 8th century and a new one founded in the same location under Norman rule (end of 11th century). The items discovered prove that between the 5th and the 7th century the island was part of a Mediterranean route linking Africa with Rome and the main locations of the western Mediterranean sea. The paper aims at analyzing the location and the range of production of the coroplasts’ workshops in ancient Akragas. While the amounts of figurines and reliefs belonging to several distinctive types, which were discovered during the excavations made in the ancient town especially in the sanctuaries, testify the success of the local workshops, a category of objects, the molds for figurines and relief decorations, is more revealing about the manufacturing districts and the repertoire at disposal of the craftsmen. Recent research in the Iron age settlement on the hill of Profitis Ilias (Gortyn) revealed part of a building belonging to the latest phase of the village (VIII-VII cent. B.C.), and perhaps intended to some civic function. Its building process involved the demolition of a part of a thick wall dated in the Protogeometric age, possibly to be identified with the defense wall of the former settlement. The stratigraphy in the building area showed significant evidence for the site occupation after the abandonment of the village.

Il X20 è una camera funeraria quadrangolare preceduta da un dromos che deriva da un preesistente arcosolio bisomo. Al suo interno accoglie 29 sepolture: dodici arcosoli per adulti e per bambini, una tomba a nicchia, due tombe a cassa e quattordici fosse pavimentali. Si è potuto accertare che l’aspetto attuale del cubicolo è il risultato di quattro fasi costruttive. Alla prima fase appartiene la decorazione ad affresco con temi floreali e vegetali, che riveste la parete settentrionale. In un momento successivo l’estensione della camera viene raddoppiata e di fonte all’ingresso si crea una scenografica sistemazione di arcosoli e tombe a cassa; nelle due ultime fasi il pavimento viene interame…
