Gortyn, Profitis Ilias. Recent excavations in the geometric and archaic settlement

2010

The settlement on Profitis Ilias and Armi Hills, located 500 m east of Gortyn acropolis, probably developed at the end of the Bronze age and was abandoned at the secondhalf of 7th century BC. Is constitutes a very important point of observation to reconstruct the complex dinamics of Gortyn's region, between the end of the Minoan culture and the Birth of the polis. The excavations, on yhe high Southern slopes of Profitis Ilias hill, involved a partof the built-up area dated to 8th - 7th century BC, set on terraces and crossed by an East-West Street. On the higher terrace, five houses have beenidentified, divided by narrow lanes from North to South and different in size and space setting. Thr…

2021

The Julio-Claudian portraits from Centuripe. A contribution from Palermo · The sculptural group of Julio-Claudian princes from Centuripe (en, Sicily) deserves an in-depth analysis after the recent works by R. Patané, who collected a lot of data and proposed a new interpretation of the whole context. Patané’s proposals are discussed starting from two pieces in the Regional Archaeological Museum “Antonino Salinas” at Palermo. A fragment of a cuirassed statue, discovered in the 19th century near the Chiesa del Crocifisso (that is, near the “Edificio degli Augustali”, at that time not yet discovered), is similar to several fragments belonging to three to six different statues of the Julio-Claud…

2021

Starting from the appellation of civitas splendidissima given by Cicero to Lilybaeum and from its relation with the juridical status of the Punic city after the Roman conquest, the aim of this paper is to reconstruct the topography of the town, with particular reference to the religious landscape. The most part of the data, as well as the information coming from epigraphy and numismatics concern the 2nd Century BC or, according with th common interpretation, the years in which Lilybaeum was under the control of Sextus Pompeus. Depicting an image of the “ciceronian city” implies an analysis of all the data, literary sources included, in order to establish which elements were still surviving …

Which Dioskouroi? On some Locrian pinakes with music-themed iconography

2016

The paper considers an iconographic type attested to in a series of Locrian pinakes, showing twins on horseback (one of which has a lyra eptacorde, the other a kantharos) in front of a female figure (type 8/35: ASMG S. IV, III, 5, fig. 34); this is considered a variant of a more common type with the Dioscuri on horseback with shield and phiale accompanied by a woman (Elena, Aphrodite or nubenda?). Without prejudice to the identity of the pair of twins, it was found that the variant would intend to emphasize a particular aspect of the male world personified by the Spartan Dioscuroi, namely the paideutic role of music for the male party of the nuptial rituals (recently, summarized in A. Belli…

Roman Pottery from Lilybaeum. Some remarks on imported products and transmarine contacts

2020

This paper shall focus on the pottery of the excavations at Marsala, in the s.c. 'Zona Mura'. Imported fine tableware was mostly produced in North Africa, although its types were widespread in the western Mediterranean from the middle Imperial period to at least the 5th century. Furthermore, there is a considerable amount of fragments of cooking pots among the catalogued material. The considerable presence of Pantellerian Ware is likely due to the trade routes between northern Tunisia and western Sicily.

Massimo Campigli e i ritratti funerari romani

2014
