Serial Verb Constructions

2009

The present article aims to give a survey of the typology of serial verb constructions (SVCs) and the criteria that are needed for defining them. For that purpose, it starts with a detailed account of Aikhenvald and Dixon (2006) and their comprehensive cross-linguistic account of SVCs. In a critical discussion of this approach, this article will then address the following three issues. (i) The concept of single eventhood is a more general concept from which a number of Aikhenvald and Dixon's (2006) criteria can be iconically derived. The macro-event property and time-positional operators (Bohnemeyer et al. 2007) provide a good basis for a more coherent definition of what makes an event as f…

The prologue and the fi rst stasimon of Oedipus at Colonus: a comparative study

2017

In this paper we analyze the fi rst stasimon of the tragedy Oedipus at Colonus of Sophocles based …

När barnet blir expert: Förklaringar av ord och procedurer i det digitala spelet Growtopia

2019

The ability to explain word meanings is central to a child’s language development and socialisation into different domains of language use. In previous research explanations have been shown to be linked to cognitive and linguistic development as well as academic language and discursive skills. This paper analyses what kinds of linguistic and discursive competences are put to use in explanation activities in interactions between an 8-year-old bilingual child (Albin) and his mother around a digital game. The data comes from a larger data set of video-recordings and field observation of children’s interactions around games. The analysis focuses on explanation sequences in which the child expli…

Santiago Matamoros en Sevilla. Mito, arte y devoción

2019

ABSTRACT: The city of Seville professed a great worship of Saint James the Moor-slayer between the 16thand 18thcenturies. This study analyses the reasons why such a cult took root in Seville, converting the city into an authentic Jacobean capital. Likewise, it delves into an analysis of the artistic works that emerged there as a consequence of the worship of Saint James, with special attention devoted to the different motivations of it promoters for undertaking those works of art.

Imagen e iconografía en las exequias del príncipe Baltasar Carlos en Zaragoza en 1646.

2014

ABSTRACT: This article studies the ceremonial funeral rites for Prince Baltasar Carlos of Austria, son of Philip IV and the hope for the healing of a monarchy in crisis, in the exequies celebrated in the city of Zaragoza, where the young heir to the throne died shortly before his seventeenth birthday, in 1646. The monumental catafalque erected in the plaza of the market place (a fantastic ephemeral tumulus characterized by a splendid Baroque architecture full of symbols), demonstrates the magnificence with which the death of such a beloved prince was presented to the public, in the second third of the seventeenth century. KEYWORDS: Prince Baltasar Carlos of Austria, Spanish Golden Age, roya…

Assessing EPAP lexical features: A corpus-based study

2018

The features of specialised languages have been extensively described by scholars in the literature. Amongst them, Enrique Alcaraz’s work stands out as an exhaustive and comprehensive description of EPAP at all linguistic levels: lexical, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic. This research aims to provide a bottom-up assessment of his description on a lexical level through the implementation of corpus-based techniques on two specialised corpora of legal and telecommunications English. The results support Alcaraz’s portrayal as regards term usage, the relevance of sub-technical vocabulary, the peculiarities of Latin single and multi word terms in legal English and the significant presence and u…

Expressing evidentiality through prosody? Prosodic voicing in reported speech in Spanish colloquial conversations

2015

Abstract The present paper attempts to establish the evidential character of the special prosodic configuration associated with direct reported discourse (DRD). A variety of expressive meanings have been commonly attributed to this marked prosodic configuration of DRD (such as expression of stance, emotion, mimicking, alignment). However, the concurrence of pragmatic/expressive meanings together with evidentiality is very frequent in ‘non-evidential’ languages like Spanish. Therefore, we argue that the prosody in DRD also signals ‘reported’ or ‘quoted’ discourse and, therefore, the presence of evidentiality. To provide evidence for this latter claim, 449 instances of DRD have been extracted…

A Multi-Phase Decode-and-Forward Transmission Protocol in Cognitive Relay Networks: Outage Analysis and Relay Power Allocation

2015

Consider an underlay cognitive relay network with multiple source and destination pairs and that a decode-and-forward scheme is adopted at the relay. We propose a multi-phase transmission protocol in this paper which involves cooperation among source, relay and destination nodes. Given perfect interference elimination before decoding at the destination nodes, we derive closed-form expressions for outage probability calculation over Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, the optimal relay power allocation factor which leads to minimal outage probability is determined. Numerical results reveal the conditions under which satisfactory performance can be achieved based on the proposed scheme.

Ambiguous Meanings and Affects – Death in Monika Fagerholm’s The American Girl and The Glitter Scene The article focuses on the deaths that take place in Monika Fagerholm’s novels The American Girl (2005) and The Glitter Scene (2009). The viewpoint to the novels is that of affects. The theore¬tical framework derives from the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze (1925–1995) who is one of the best-known 20th century philosophers of affect. Firstly, the article discusses the ways in which the deaths affect the characters of the novels. Attention is paid especially to the central character called Doris Flinkenberg. She is strongly affected by the deaths that have taken place in the District where …
