A GIS-Based Methodology for Evaluating the Increase in Multimodal Transport between Bicycle and Rail Transport Systems. A Case Study in Palermo
2021
Background: In a world where every municipality is pursuing the goals of more sustainable mobility, bicycles play a fundamental role in getting rid of private cars and travelling by an eco-friendly mode of transport. Additionally, private and shared bikes can be used as a feeder transit system, solving the problem of the first- and last-mile trips. Thanks to GIS (Geographic Information System) software, it is possible to evaluate the effectiveness of such a sustainable means of transport in future users’ modal choice. Methods: Running an accessibility analysis of cycling and rail transport services, the potential mobility demand attracted by these services and the possible multimodality bet…
Statistical Techniques for Validation of Simulation and Analytic Stochastic Models
2014
In this paper, we consider the problem of statistical validation of multivariate stationary response simulation and analytic stochastic models of observed systems (say, transportation or service systems), which have p response variables. The problem is reduced to testing the equality of the mean vectors for two multivariate normal populations. Without assuming equality of the covariance matrices, it is referred to as the Behrens–Fisher problem. The main purpose of this paper is to bring to the attention of applied researchers the satisfactory tests that can be used for testing the equality of two normal mean vectors when the population covariance matrices are unknown and arbitrary. Three-dimensional architecture of the whole human soleus muscle in vivo
2018
Background Most data on the architecture of the human soleus muscle have been obtained from cadaveric dissection or two-dimensional ultrasound imaging. We present the first comprehensive, quantitative study on the three-dimensional anatomy of the human soleus muscle in vivo using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) techniques. Methods We report three-dimensional fascicle lengths, pennation angles, fascicle curvatures, physiological cross-sectional areas and volumes in four compartments of the soleus at ankle joint angles of 69 ± 12° (plantarflexion, short muscle length; average ± SD across subjects) and 108 ± 7° (dorsiflexion, long muscle length) of six healthy young adults. Microdissection and…

Nonlocal dispersion anomalies of Dyakonov-like surface waves at hyperbolic media interfaces
2016
Dyakonov-like surface waves (DSWs) propagating obliquely on an anisotropic nanostructure have been theoretically proved in a few cases including 2D photonic crystals and metal-insulator (MI) layered metamaterials. Up to now, the long-wavelength approximation has been employed in order to obtain effective parameters to be introduced in the Dyakonov equation, which is largely restricted to material inhomogeneities of a few nanometers when including metallic elements. Here, we explore DSWs propagating obliquely at the interface between an insulator and a hyperbolic metamaterial, the latter consisting of a 1D MI bandgap grating using realistic slab sizes. We found unexpected favorable condition…
Effect of size and deformation on polarizabilities of carbon nanotubes from atomic increments
2004
The interacting induced-dipole polarization model implemented in program POLAR is used for the calculation of the polarizability α. The method is tested with single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) as a function of radius and elliptical deformation. This work gives a partial success with the application of POLAR when compared with reference calculations performed with program PAPID. α follows a simple law. PAPID differentiates more effectively than POLAR among SWNTs with increasing radial deformation, a can be modified reversibly by external radial deformation. Different effective αeff are calculated for the atoms at the highest and lowest curvature sites. The difference between POLAR and PAPI…

What?s new in intelligent transportation systems?: An overview of European projects and initiatives
2013
This article is a taxonomy of recent intelligent transportation systems (ITS) initiatives/projects in Europe, and it covers nearly all of the main segments of the transportation sector. The purpose is to appraise the milestones that have been reached so far in the area of ITS. Furthermore, this article will help in identifying directions for future research. By highlighting the potential advantages users get through deployed ITS solutions, this article stimulates the interest of users and relevant stakeholders in the uptake of this technology. Finally, it will also serve as a useful resource for those agents of the scientific community who are interested in taking part in the European Commi…
Enhancing Privacy and Authorization Control Scalability in the Grid through Ontologies
2009
The use of data Grids for sharing relevant data has proven to be successful in many research disciplines. However, the use of these environments when personal data are involved (such as in health) is reduced due to its lack of trust. There are many approaches that provide encrypted storages and key shares to prevent the access from unauthorized users. However, these approaches are additional layers that should be managed along with the authorization policies. We present in this paper a privacy-enhancing technique that uses encryption and relates to the structure of the data and their organizations, providing a natural way to propagate authorization and also a framework that fits with many u…
