TAKING INSPIRATION FROM NATURE: RULES AND PROCEDURES FOR A GOOD BUILDING PRACTICE

2016

Negotiation Models in Manufacturing E-Marketplaces

2005

This chapter describes the negotiation model adopted by the Customer and Supplier Negotiation Agents in the agent based architecture described in Chapter 2. The chapter is structured as it follows: in the first section the use of automated negotiation in modern market scenario is motivated; in the second section, starting form the contributions presented in the scientific literature, automated negotiation will be analysed and a taxonomy will be proposed. The third section is dedicated to the e-market context discussed in this book and in particular the impact of negotiation in manufacturing e-marketplaces will be stressed: its impact is strictly related to the electronic nature of e-marketp…

Nurses' experiences by using heated humidified high flow cannula to premature infants versus nasal continuous positive airway pressure

2016

Abstract Background Some premature infants are now being treated with heated humidified high flow nasal cannula (HHHFNC) instead of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP). Purpose To explore nurses' experiences of using HHHFNC compared with nCPAP for premature infants. Method Six qualitative in-depth interviews were completed with nurses at two different newborn intensive care units. Results Preterm infants showed greater satisfaction with HHHFNC than nasal continuous positive airway pressure. HHHFNC was also associated with fewer pressure injuries and less facial discomfort, and an increased bonding between baby and parent. However, HHHFNC gave less ventilation support than nCPA…

Termite Nests: Architecture, Regulation and Defence

2000

Termite nest architecture evolved along with changes in lifestyle, the basic building behaviour being transmitted through the genes of reproductives. The main selective pressure is thought to have been defence against predators. In more advanced termites the maintenance of homeostasis in temperature and humidity may appear to dominate nest architecture. Nest defence involves nest structures in combination with the morphology and behaviour of the sterile castes. The soldier caste, characteristic of termites, is specialized for defence, with a variety of mechanical and chemical weapons, but this caste was lost in some advanced genera, especially the Apicotermitinae. Workers are always involve…

Defining the role of common variation in the genomic and biological architecture of adult human height

2014

Item does not contain fulltext Using genome-wide data from 253,288 individuals, we identified 697 variants at genome-wide significance that together explained one-fifth of the heritability for adult height. By testing different numbers of variants in independent studies, we show that the most strongly associated approximately 2,000, approximately 3,700 and approximately 9,500 SNPs explained approximately 21%, approximately 24% and approximately 29% of phenotypic variance. Furthermore, all common variants together captured 60% of heritability. The 697 variants clustered in 423 loci were enriched for genes, pathways and tissue types known to be involved in growth and together implicated genes…

Genetic architecture of circulating lipid levels

2011

Serum concentrations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TGs) and total cholesterol (TC) are important heritable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Although genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of circulating lipid levels have identified numerous loci, a substantial portion of the heritability of these traits remains unexplained. Evidence of unexplained genetic variance can be detected by combining multiple independent markers into additive genetic risk scores. Such polygenic scores, constructed using results from the ENGAGE Consortium GWAS on serum lipids, were applied to predict lipid levels in an independen…

Imaginary time propagation code for large-scale two-dimensional eigenvalue problems in magnetic fields

2013

We present a code for solving the single-particle, time-independent Schr\"odinger equation in two dimensions. Our program utilizes the imaginary time propagation (ITP) algorithm, and it includes the most recent developments in the ITP method: the arbitrary order operator factorization and the exact inclusion of a (possibly very strong) magnetic field. Our program is able to solve thousands of eigenstates of a two-dimensional quantum system in reasonable time with commonly available hardware. The main motivation behind our work is to allow the study of highly excited states and energy spectra of two-dimensional quantum dots and billiard systems with a single versatile code, e.g., in quantum …
