The contribution presented here is part of a work-in-progress project, which has as its focus the “extra-moenia” urban transformations suffered by the city of Palermo after World War II, with the aim of cataloging, reconstructing and restoring the remarkable heritage -lost in the years of the economic boom and building speculation- in three-dimensional virtual images. Michele Vella, sculptor and antiquarian of Agrigento, born in nearby Raffadali, is known through chronicles and accounts of foreign travelers who visited "the city of temples" duringin the last few decades of the eighteenth century. Prior to devote himself to the study of ancient Agrigento and to become a "guide" of famous visitors, such as Goethe, he began to develop a treatise on architecture dedicated in 1766 to the bishop Andrea Lucchesi Palli. The unfinished manuscript titled Vari Componimenti d'Architettura is now located at the Library Lucchesiana of Agrigento.

The present state of knowledge about Sicilian scenography and theatrical architecture in the modern age is a major obstacle along the path to synthesizing current interpretations in the field. The scarcity of documentary sources, the almost total absence of iconographic evidence, and the destruction suffered by these edifices (starting from the earthquake of 1693) provide an fragmentary picture composed of isolated specimens that are difficult, if not impossible, to decipher. The rich Arab - Norman architectural heritage of Palermo is, in its manifestation of different forms of art, an exceptional and unique result of a cultural syncretism. It describes the city as a privileged gathering place of the West Christian culture with the Eastern Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world in the twelfth century.
