Acquisition of Skills, Training Activities and Learning Outcomes: Empirical Evidence in the Degree in Finance and Accounting

2015

The aim of this paper is examining whether the new teaching model, based on a skills training approach, is being applied in the implementation of degrees. In particular, we examine it by an analysis of the degree in Finance and Accounting at University of Valencia. Interviews with the subjects’ coordinators as well as surveys addressed to both students and professors show that, although methodological changes have been made, the new teaching model has not been adopted yet. Results also show that carrying out more training activities does not have a signifi cant effect on the students’ learning outcomes.

Accelerating large-scale biological database search on Xeon Phi-based neo-heterogeneous architectures

2015

In this paper we present new parallelization techniques for searching large-scale biological sequence databases with the Smith-Waterman algorithm on Xeon Phi-based neoheterogenous architectures. In order to make full use of the compute power of both the multi-core CPU and the many-core Xeon Phi hardware, we use a collaborative computing scheme as well as hybrid parallelism. At the CPU side, we employ SSE intrinsics and multi-threading to implement SIMD parallelism. At the Xeon Phi side, we use Knights Corner vector instructions to gain more data parallelism. We have presented two dynamic task distribution schemes (thread level and device level) in order to achieve better load balancing. Fur…

A distributed-memory MPI parallelization scheme for multi-domain incompressible SPH

2022

A parallel scheme for a multi-domain truly incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) approach is presented. The proposed method is developed for distributed-memory architectures through the Message Passing Interface (MPI) paradigm as communication between partitions. The proposal aims to overcome one of the main drawbacks of the SPH method, which is the high computational cost with respect to mesh-based methods, by coupling a multi-resolution approach with parallel computing techniques. The multi-domain approach aims to employ different resolutions by subdividing the computational domain into non-overlapping blocks separated by block interfaces. The particles belonging to differe…

Personality Expression and Impression Formation in Online Social Networks: An Integrative Approach to Understanding the Processes of Accuracy, Impres…

2014

In this paper, we investigate personality expression and impression formation processes in online social networks (OSNs). We explore whether, when and why people accurately judge others’ personalities (accuracy), successfully manage the impressions that others form of them (impression management) and accurately infer others’ impressions of them (meta–accuracy) at zero acquaintance. On the basis of targets’ OSN profiles (N = 103), overall perceiver impressions were collected and compared with targets’ self–view, desired impression and meta–perception. In addition, independent groups of thin–slice perceivers based their personality impressions solely on one of four kinds of information withi…

Markov Model for Tweets Geographic Distribution Characterization

2015

Abstract In this paper we will continue our researches regarding e-Business and e-Government modeling on Social Media presented in (Stoica, Pitic, & Mihaescu, 2013). Among message and user parameters we add a new parameter used to describe the geographical dispersion of Twitter messages. This new parameter will characterize the way one set of messages will spread in Social Graph from the physical word point of view. The first model, presented as “A Novel Model for E-Business and E-Government Processes on Social”, will be extended with the geographical parameter PG. We will define and we will describe the Markov Model used to organize the messages gathered from social media. The main idea of…

Towards a fuzzy-linguistic based social network sentiment-expression system

2015

Liking allows users of Social Networks, blogs and online magazines to express their support of posts and artifacts by a simple click. Such function is very popular but lacks semantic power, and some platforms have augmented it by allowing to choose a pictographic depiction corresponding to a feeling. What is gained in depth is lost in simplicity, and the wide acceptance liking has enjoyed did not carried to the sentiment version. We outline a sentiment-expression hybrid system based on textual analysis and linguistic fuzzy Markov chains overcoming the intrinsic limitations of liking without burdening the user with complex choices.

Brain Controlled Architecture for Human-Human Interaction Mediated by a Humanoid Robot

2017

This paper presents an Assistive social robots architecture designed for social interaction with humans, mediated by a humanoid robot. The architecture has been designed for being used by people with severe paralysis and the architecture has been tested by a user affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in a locked-in state. The system allows the patient to communicate with the stakeholders using a Brain Controlled Interface, based on Evoked Response Potentials (ERP), to express needing, feelings or writing phases. Stakeholders visualize messages sent by the patient on a GUI and use a tele operated humanoid robot as an avatar of them to extend their physical presence to interact with…

2019

Trust is a critical issue in human–robot interactions: as robotic systems gain complexity, it becomes crucial for them to be able to blend into our society by maximizing their acceptability and reliability. Various studies have examined how trust is attributed by people to robots, but fewer have investigated the opposite scenario, where a robot is the trustor and a human is the trustee. The ability for an agent to evaluate the trustworthiness of its sources of information is particularly useful in joint task situations where people and robots must collaborate to reach shared goals. We propose an artificial cognitive architecture based on the developmental robotics paradigm that can estimate…
