Elaboration of a Critical Paradigm for Interpreting Modern Architecture: The Almost Intangible Essence of Luigi Moretti's Casa del Balilla at Trecate

2021

Modern architecture is not, from a lexical point of view, uniquely definable. The heterogeneity of the twentieth century heritage is therefore a collective wealth that should be protected from the risk of falling into oblivion. In order to avoid this, it could prove fundamental to establish a process of the knowledge of these assets. This should not, however, result in a simple and passive recording of architectural facts: a deep understanding of the complexity of modern architecture, which has as its objective the protection of buildings, could be obtained, for example, through a real and proper decoding of signs, conducted by a critical use of the metalanguage most congenial to the archit…

Autonomic behaviors in an Ambient Intelligence system

2014

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) systems are constantly evolving and becoming ever more complex, so it is increasingly difficult to design and develop them successfully. Moreover, because of the complexity of an AmI system as a whole, it is not always easy for developers to predict its behavior in the event of unforeseen circumstances. A possible solution to this problem might lie in delegating certain decisions to the machines themselves, making them more autonomous and able to self-configure and self-manage, in line with the paradigm of Autonomic Computing. In this regard, many researchers have emphasized the importance of adaptability in building agents that are suitable to operate in real-wor…

Optimal Adaptive Inspection Planning Process in Service of Fatigued Aircraft Structures

2009

In this paper, a control theory is used for planning inspections in service of fatigue-sensitive aircraft structure components under crack propagation. One of the most important features of control theory is its great generality, enabling one to analyze diverse systems within one unified framework. A key idea, which has emerged from this study, is the necessity of viewing the process of planning in-service inspections as an adaptive control process. Adaptation means the ability of self-modification and self-adjustment in accordance with varying conditions of environment. The adaptive control of inspection planning process in service of fatigued aircraft structures differs from ordinary stoc…

Dialog Structure Automatic Modeling

2010

This paper presents the approach implemented as part of a conversational bot named WIH (Word Intelligent Handler). It has a complex architecture with several components. Some of them are the ER-memory, EP-memory and other minor modules that provide the prototype of good modeling of Spanish sentences. They constitute the knowledge-representation mechanism that is used by WIH to build automatic answers during dialogs with humans. In this paper a small description of these components and some of its interaction is given, along with test cases and a statistical analysis of the results obtained. It is shown here that WIH prototype can adapt its behavior and learning rate of its internal working …

Attraversare

2016

Domain Expert Platform for Goal-Oriented Dialog Collection

2021

Today, most dialogue systems are fully or partly built using neural network architectures. A crucial prerequisite for the creation of a goal-oriented neural network dialogue system is a dataset that represents typical dialogue scenarios and includes various semantic annotations, e.g. intents, slots and dialogue actions, that are necessary for training a particular neural network architecture. In this demonstration paper, we present an easy to use interface and its back-end which is oriented to domain experts for the collection of goal-oriented dialogue samples. The platform not only allows to collect or write sample dialogues in a structured way, but also provides a means for simple annotat…

Using Hierarchies to Adapt Domain Analysis to Software Development

2001

Software development strives toward increasing the amount and quality of the software and at the same time decreasing the costs and development time. One approach to achieve these diverse goals is the systematic software reuse (Biggerstaff and Richter, 1987). In the reuse-oriented software development the key success factor is domain analysis (DA) (Arango, 1989; Lam and McDermid, 1997; Prieto-Diaz, 1994). DA is a process through which information used in software development is identified, captured, and organized with the purpose of making it reusable when creating new systems (Prieto-Diaz, 1990). While the traditional development methods (e.g., Jaaksi et al.,1999; Jacobson et al., 1999) fo…

Simplex selves, functional synergies, and selving: Languaging in a complex world

2019

Abstract In this paper, I present selves as simplex structures (Berthoz, 2012/2009) that construct themselves and are constructed in and through the embodied socio-cognitive dynamics of ‘selving’. Selves are, following Vygotsky (1986 : 59–73; see also Ratner, 2017), individuations and crystallisations of the concrete social relations in which the self has participated along its life-trajectory. Selving arises and takes place in dialogically coordinated languaging activity. In complex social and cultural worlds, simplex selves-in-languaging constitute and stabilise their own and others' experience and living bodies in and through norm saturated languaging. Thus, while human subjectivity is f…

Delineation of the boundary of an urban agglomeration: evidence from Riga, Latvia

2019

AbstractStatistical, morphological and functional approaches have long been used to delineate spatial boundaries of urban agglomerations. This research uses data from the Central Statistical Bureau and the State Revenue Service. The results indicate that morphological and functional approaches are essential when defining the agglomeration, however the outcomes are different. The most relevant consistency was observed in the territorial units adjoining the city of Riga due to the fact that they have a common labour market with Riga and share a strong functional linkage. However, the spatial extent based on the morphological approach confirms and highlights the effects of urban sprawl.

Recommended practice for out-of-hospital emergency anaesthesia in adults: Statement from the Out-of-Hospital Emergency Anaesthesia Working Group of t…

2016

Emergency anaesthesia is an important therapeutic measure in out-of-hospital emergency medicine. The associated risks are considerably higher than those of in-hospital anaesthesia. The primary objectives of emergency anaesthesia are hypnosis, analgesia, oxygenation and ventilation through airway management. The secondary objectives of emergency anaesthesia are amnesia, anxiolysis, the reduction of oxygen consumption and respiratory work, the protection of vital organs and the avoidance of secondary myocardial and cerebral damage. A critical evaluation of the indications for outof- hospital emergency anaesthesia must take into consideration patient, case and provider-related factors. Rapid s…
