DSSC-integrated Glassblocks for the construction of Sustainable Building Envelopes

2014

The paper shows the first results of the optical performance analysis carried out on the DSSC integrated glassblock, an innovative building product developed at the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo. In the field of a research that is being conducted in order to define innovative solutions for the construction of photovoltaic and energy efficient translucent building envelopes, different hypotheses of integration of DSSC into the glassblock have been foreseen. The integration of glassblock with third generation PV systems allows to define a novel building-PV product that meets the current requirements of the BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaics) market. By means of …

Performance of the Glass Block in Photovoltaic Generation

2015

In this article is presented the preliminary evaluation of the performance of radiation transmission of glass block, used in support of photovoltaic cells, investigating different internal surface points of the block, which are subject to different shading during daylight hours. The aim is to establish how the edging setting, the only opaque element, can reduce the amount of light radiation during the day, introducing in this way a reduction of efficiency of the entire generation system. The generation system can be based on traditional photovoltaic cells or on the most suitable dye sensitized solar cells. An experimental measurement setup employing a microprocessor-based instrument has bee…

Integrating thermal and mechanical characteristics of historic masonry categories: Development of a Sicilian database

2021

Detailed construction analysis is essential to the compatible energy improvement of historic buildings. In-situ measurements are crucial for energy diagnosis but their use is limited, especially in vernacular architecture. This paper exposes the development of a hygrothermal and mechanical database for Sicilian historic walls. The proposed method, applied to eleven historic centres, is based on the investigation of those masonry construction features, which recur in local contexts. Preliminary results concern the case study of Petralia Sottana, where a first set of laboratory measurements of stone compressive strength and thermal conductivity was conducted, together with in-situ tests of ma…

The use of wood with an anti-seismic function in the architecture of palermo during the 18th century

2016

The study analyzes the interventions in the historical buildings after the earthquakes that struck Palermo in 1726 and 1751, with a particular attention to the anti-seismic reinforcements. The research, based primarily on archival documents, focuses on a series of interventions in the architectural heritage, in which the use of wood for structural elements, was able to guarantee for an “antiseismic” reconstruction. Although wood was not commonly used as other materials (iron, for instance) in the post-earthquake reconstruction process of Palermo it was certified its use as an anti-seismic system in the reinforcements of the damaged buildings. It is documented, for instance, the insertion of…

Timber anti-seismic devices in historical architecture in the Mediterranean area

2017

Plaster ventilated façade system for renovating modern and ancient buildings. A CFD analysis

2021

In the past decades several researches have been related to energy saving and emissions reduction. The technologies that exploit passive natural ventilation, like ventilated roofs and fa ades, have been recognized as the effective methods to provide energy saving and comfort. Ventilated fa ades represent dry assembled coating systems for buildings, traditionally made of panels in different materials. Very few ventilated fa ade systems with plaster finishes are already present on the building market. The potentiality of their design solution can be considered, e.g., when an historic building has to be recovered, since they can enhance the energy efficiency of building without changing its ap…

2011

Recensione del testo di P.V. NIELSEN (CURATORE), F. ALLARD, H.B.

Liberty winter gardens in Palermo: contamination from solar design

2020

At the end of the 19th century, the city of Palermo boasted a tradition of steel elements that could include the most beautiful railings and light steel structures of the time. The paper shows how the technological, formal and spatial aspects of the metallic construction was derived by the application of Central Europe areas examples to the local reality, providing notions on designs, experimentations and originalities. Canopies, verandas, winter gardens and orangeries are architectural elements in iron and glass that represent an added value for the building, they improve the life quality of the people who live there. In particular, in the Liberty architecture these elements took shape thr…
