Si richiamano i notevoli impegni della città di Palermo durante più secoli per pavimentare le maggiori strade e piazze e migliorarne la qualità ambientale. Si richiamano inoltre le norme che obbligavano ad una esecuzione corretta e duratura. Queste erano fortemente stringenti anche per gli interventi di riparazione e manutenzione. Si fa riferimento alle condizioni attuali delle pavimentazioni nel centro storico che sono frutto di recenti interventi di bassa qualità, ovvero hanno ricoperto con asfalto le superfici lapidee.

The use of maiolica bricks as artefact for surface decoration is widespread both in monumental and ordinary architectures in the Mediterranean regions, harmonizing the local construction traditions with the Islamic influences. This study presents an in-depth analysis of examples of spires and domes in Sicily featuring earthenware maiolica cladding serving both as decoration and structural element. Due to the limited knowledge of these artefacts, incautious construction operations led to an alteration of their material and technical features, putting at risk a centuries-old heritage. Il fortuito ritrovamento al di sotto del terreno di riporto, di un antico ponte in muratura ancora perfettamente integro, ha sollecitato una ricerca sull’epoca e le tecniche di costruzione adottate. Attraverso l’analisi delle fonti antiche, della cartografia attuale e storica, delle cronache del tempo si è delineata la storia del sistema di attraversamento del fiume Oreto, l’espansione della città fino all’area del ponte, ritrovando quelle pratiche sociali che hanno fatto attribuire il nome non consueto. The effect of Water on passive cooling systems in the Arab-Norman architecture of the Zisa Palace in Palermo

This paper shows the theories argued by some historians with reference to the working of natural water passive cooling systems employed in the Zisa Complex. Albeit such theories are seminal attempts to understand passive water systems, they have no scientific evidence. This study instead concentrates on a more rigorous treatment that enabled to set up a robust framework for designing a historical water passive system such as the Salsabil, which in fact was conceived and developed in an empirical way.
