Thermochromic materials such as vanadium dioxide have been postulated for use in “SMART” windows for a number of years. Such windows work by exploiting a structural phase change from an infra-red transmissive state to a infra-red reflective state. Significant challenges still remain before such materials will be able to find wide spread use. In this mini review we discuss the nature of this thermochromic transition with reference to the latest research work in the field. We pay particular attention to challenges such as film colouration, transition temperature, and transition hysteresis. Nel presente lavoro viene presentata ed analizzata una soluzione progettuale per la riqualificazione del Municipio di Mazara del Vallo (Italia) che prevede l’impiego di un sistema integrato di ventilazione naturale e raffrescamento passivo. Il sistema in oggetto combina tecniche tradizionali e moderne di ventilazione e raffrescamento ed è costituito da una torre del vento, da una rete di tubazioni interrate, da una facciata ventilata ed da un camino solare. Pantelleria, a volcanic island between Tunisia and Sicily, is characterized by a highly windy territory constantly hit by the sun. This harsh environment forced the inhabitants to build in an extremely effective way against the natural elements. This paper investigates constructive technologies, local materials, and phases of construction of the traditional rural houses, the dammuso, a Sicilian word meaning “vaulted-building”. It is a traditional passive cooling building characterized by a cubical shape covered by a vaulted-roof. The aim of this work is to study and analyse new thermochromic coatings for architectural glazing carried out using a novel hybrid technique called Aerosol Assisted and Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Vapour Deposition (AA/AP CVD). This work was carried on at he University College London (UCL) – Chemistry Department – Christopher Ingold Laboratories – London (UK), under the supervision of the Prof. Ivan P. Parkin, with the collaboration of Dr. Clara Piccirillo and Dr. Russell Binions. The activities completed were the depositions of Gold-doped Vanadium (IV) Dioxide coatings and their chemical and physical analysis.

Sommario Come in gran parte dell'area meridionale ed insulare dell'Italia, anche nella cittadina di Vico Equense, angolo incantevole della penisola sorrentina, permangono brani ed episodi di grande valore architettonico, retaggio dell'epoca catalana-aragonese. L'articolo ne analizza sommariamente gli elementi tecnico-artistici, dai portali ai vani di finestra, dai sistemi voltati costolonati alle scale esterne localizzate all'interno delle corti, ad altri elementi "minori" quali murature, archi, cornicioni, balconi, ... mettendo a confronto l'area campana e le emergenze coeve nel territorio siciliano.
