Inner areas’ cultural, architectural and landscape heritage: study, enhancement and fruition. Potential driver for sustainable territorial developmen…
2022
The processes of gradual abandonment of inner areas, that have been triggered since the second half of the 20th century, generated problems that have been the subject of a wide-ranging scientific and multidisciplinary debate aimed at developing focused political and planning strategies. In 2013 at national level the SNAI, Italian National Strategy for Inner Areas, and later specific actions activated by the Territorial Cohesion Agency, was founded to aim the reactivation of areas defined as “remote with the intention of mitigating territorial marginalization. This article introduces an international and interdisciplinary Seminar based to discuss some concrete experiences. The debate was att…
Two-level branch prediction using neural networks
2003
Dynamic branch prediction in high-performance processors is a specific instance of a general time series prediction problem that occurs in many areas of science. Most branch prediction research focuses on two-level adaptive branch prediction techniques, a very specific solution to the branch prediction problem. An alternative approach is to look to other application areas and fields for novel solutions to the problem. In this paper, we examine the application of neural networks to dynamic branch prediction. We retain the first level history register of conventional two-level predictors and replace the second level PHT with a neural network. Two neural networks are considered: a learning vec…

Carbon Stocks in Peri-Urban Areas: A Case Study of Remote Sensing Capabilities
2014
Peri-urban areas are the extension of cities into contiguous areas, where households and farms coexist. Carbon stocks (CSs) assessment, a concept here extended to urban features, has not yet been studied in depth over peri-urban areas due to uncertainties in such CSs quantification, level of detail required about construction materials, and the high spatial variability of those stocks. Remote sensing (RS)-based techniques have been successfully utilized in urban areas for assessing phenomena such as soil sealing, sprawl patterns, and dynamics of surface imperviousness, especially focusing on land cover classification at high to medium spatial scales. Over the floodplain study area of Emilia…
Plant invasion risk inside and outside protected areas: Propagule pressure, abiotic and biotic factors definitively matter
2023
Invasive alien species are among the main global drivers of biodiversity loss posing major challenges to nature conservation and to managers of protected areas. The present study applied a methodological framework that combined invasive Species Distribution Models, based on propagule pressure, abiotic and biotic factors for 14 invasive alien plants of Union concern in Italy, with the local interpretable model-agnostic explanation analysis aiming to map, evaluate and analyse the risk of plant invasions across the country, inside and outside the network of protected areas. Using a hierarchical invasive Species Distribution Model, we explored the combined effect of propagule pressure, abiotic …
The neolithic settlement of Limoneros (Elche, Alicante)
2020
[EN] This paper shows the results of rescue archaeology campaigns undertaken on the site of Limoneros, an open-air settlement located to the south of Elche (Alicante), in the alluvial plain of the Vinalopó river and dated on the first half of the 5th millennium cal BC. The settlement entails different negative structures, including two stretches of ditch, silos and basins, structures finally reused as a waste area. The analysis of the recovered evidences allows the characterization of the activities developed by a farming community in a territory articulated by the river Vinalopó, where other settlements dated back to the same period have been documented. Therefore, Limoneros supplies relev…

Dasymetric distribution of votes in a dense city
2017
[EN] A large proportion of electoral analyses using geography are performed on a small area basis, such as polling units. Unfortunately, polling units are frequently redrawn, provoking breaks in their data series. Previous electoral results play a key role in many analyses. They are used by political party workers and journalists to present quick assessments of outcomes, by political scientists and electoral geographers to perform detailed scrutinizes and by pollsters and forecasters to anticipate electoral results. In this paper, we study to what extent more complex geographical approaches (based on a proper location of electors on the territory using dasymetric techniques) are of value in…
Non-Indigenous Species (NIS) within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The case study of the Aegadian Islands MPA (Sicily, Tyrrhenian Sea) and the Dwejra…
2018
The introduction of non-indigenous species (NIS) has been pointed out as a major threat to biodiversity. NIS may become invasive alien species (IAS) and may cause biodiversity loss and ecosystem service changes. In the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and surrounding islands, also including a high number of Marine Protected Area (MPAs), as a consequence of their geographic position and the intense maritime traffic, is a region particularly vulnerable and prone to NIS invasions. Since frontiers do not exist in the sea, biological invasions may severely affect MPAs, whose major aim is biodiversity conservation. Among the Sicilian MPAs, the Aegadian Islands MPA report the highest number of NIS (19). M…
Fascioliasis in Llama, Lama glama, in Andean Endemic Areas: Experimental Transmission Capacity by the High Altitude Snail Vector Galba truncatula and…
2021
Simple Summary The infection by the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica in South American camelids, mainly llamas and alpacas, has been the focus of many studies. However, their capacity to participate in the transmission of the disease and their potential reservoir role in human or animal endemic areas have never been studied. Therefore, all development stages of an isolate from Argentine llama of the high Andean plateau have been experimentally investigated, from egg embryogenesis to metacercarial infectivity, by using the vector snail Galba truncatula from the high altitude Bolivian Altiplano human hyperendemic area. Although eggs shed by llamas may successfully develop until the adult stage i…
