Abstract Abandonment of agricultural land is a common feature of areas undergoing a range of urbanisation and marginalisation processes across Europe and beyond. This is also the case in Latvia, particularly in the period since 1990, when after regaining independence from the Soviet Union land was restored to its previous owners or their descendants. Many of these people have moved to cities and lack the interest in or the necessary capital for starting farming enterprises. La Sicilia è una delle regioni mediterranee con la maggior biodiversità faunistica e floristica la cui conservazione, potrà dipendere anche da un attento piano di valutazione del rischio derivante dall’introduzione di piante geneticamente modificate (PGM) sugli organismi non target. A tal fine sono state scelte due aree rappresentative di differenti habitat siciliani: il SIC “Raffo Rosso, Monte Cuccio e Vallone Sagana (ITA020023) e il SIC “Capo Gallo” (ITA020006). I report here the first record of Heptapleurum arboricola Hayata (syn. Schefflera arboricola (Hayata) Merr.) (Araliaceae) as a casual non-native plant throughout the Mediterranean area. I observed the natural regeneration in urban areas at Castellammare del Golfo, a small coastal town in north-west Sicily (Mediterranean Italy). Due to the lack of self-sustaining populations and the short-term observational period, Heptapleurum arboricola should be considered as a casual species according to the classification of non-native plants.
