Latvijas Universitātes kultūrvēsturiskais mantojums izstādēs: Bibliotēkas versija
2020
A review of methods to assess connectivity and dispersal between fish populations in the Mediterranean Sea
2013
Fish populations are linked to each other via dispersal of individuals as eggs, larvae, juveniles or adults. The understanding of this process, known as connectivity, has a pivotal role for the management of overexploited fish stocks and the development of accurate conservation strategies. Knowledge on connectivity and fish movements is considered fundamental toward the correct design of marine protected area (MPA) networks for the achievement of the benefits of protection. Connectivity patterns are still largely unknown worldwide. A general lack of knowledge is particularly evident for the Mediterranean Sea where few studies dealing with this topic have been carried out and some methods, c…
More wood but less biodiversity in forests in Finland: a historical evaluation
2022
National forest inventories (NFI) in Finland provide empirical evidence for a marked increase in tree growth, total forest area, and total timber volume over the past century. Meanwhile, the assessments of threatened forest species and habitats indicate continuous degradation of biodiversity in Finnish forests. To shed light on this seeming paradox, we summarized the temporal patterns of forest characteristics (indicators) that have major influence on biodiversity, comparing the structure of current Finnish forests with natural and historical references. Using a variety of data sources, we estimated the proportion of area of old-growth forest and of deciduous-dominated forests, the density …

The Christian Funerary Areas
2017
After the earthquake of 365 A.D., the gradual process of Christianisation that involved the territories of North Africa left many signs in the Regio Tripolitania. Sabratha became a diocesan centre during the 4th and 5th centuries, and the Paleochristian catacomb, excavated after the Peace of the Church in year 313, is the first attestation of the new faith, togerther with the open-air funerary areas distributed between the episcopal complex of the Regio III, the Oceanus Thermae, the Theatre in the Regio IV and the Temple of Hercules.

Risks related to gas manifestations in the Hellenic territory
2015
Like other geodynamically active areas, Greece is affected by a large number of geogenic gas manifestations. These occur either in form of point sources (fumaroles, mofettes, bubbling gases) or as diffuse emanations. We produced a catalogue of the geogenic gas manifestations of Greece also considering few literature data. Collected samples were analysed for their chemical (He, Ne, Ar, O2, N2, H2, H2S, CO, CH4 and CO2) and isotopic composition (He, C and N). Geogenic gases, apart from having important influences on the global climate, could have strong impact on human health. Gas hazard is often disregarded because fatal episodes are often not correctly attributed. Geodynamic active areas re…
