The emergence of a shared action ontology: building blocks for a theory.

2003

To have an ontology is to interpret a world. In this paper we argue that the brain, viewed as a representational system aimed at interpreting our world, possesses an ontology too. It creates primitives and makes existence assumptions. It decomposes target space in a way that exhibits a certain invariance, which in turn is functionally significant. We will investigate which are the functional regularities guiding this decomposition process, by answering to the following questions: What are the explicit and implicit assumptions about the structure of reality, which at the same time shape the causal profile of the brain's motor output and its representational deep structure, in particular of t…

How do illiterate adults react to metalinguistic training?

2013

The present study focuses on the capacity of illiterate adults to master three different metalinguistic tasks: judgment of phonological length of words, initial consonant deletion, and lexical segmentation of sentences. Illiterates’ performance, during a pre-test and after training, was compared with that of literates and partial illiterates (adults at the beginning of the process of acquiring literacy) who received the same training. In the pre-test, illiterates were lower than literates in the three tasks; and partial-illiterates were at an intermediate level in two of the tasks. The three groups profited from the training, especially illiterates and partial-illiterates for whom improveme…

Smart energy users: ICT instruments for the consumer awareness

2015

The European Commission is supporting many projects in the field of energy saving, with the aim to improve user behavior and to help Europe to meet emission targets. In October 2012, the European Union adopted the Energy Efficiency Directive with the aim to reduce the primary energy consumption by 20% by 2020. One key point in the reduction of energy consumption energy is the awareness of final users about their usage of energy. At the same time, policies aimed at improving the efficiency of energy use, are a keystone in the strategies of leading Distribution System Operators (DSOs) and energy retail companies that started to offer, in addition to the energy supply, services and suggestions…

Slaying the SA-Demons – Humans vs. Technology – A Content analysis

2021

This paper examines Situation Awareness (SA) and the application of Endsley’s SA-Demons in different contexts and research areas. We perform content analysis to examine how they are used, and to what degree they are perceived as stemming from human-error or weaknesses in technology and if any suggestions for mitigation are primarily focused on the human or the technology side. Based on our findings, we propose Universal Design as a tool that can counter the effects of the SA-Demons by improving the usability and accessibility of SA-supporting technology and thereby removing barriers to SA, rather than challenging the users to overcome not only barriers that are a result of the complexity of…

Abstract This article contains intensity and aversiveness ratings of electrical stimuli and data on electrodermal activity (skin conductance level and skin conductance response) during an implicit conditioning procedure. Further, answers from a questionnaire on contingency awareness are provided. The experiment consisted of three phases. In the acquisition, two types of visual stimuli (CS+ and CS-) were coupled to weakly and moderately painful electrical stimuli presented to the participants’ (N = 48) dominant hand. In the test phase, after both CS+ and CS- only the weakly painful electrical stimuli were presented. In the contingency test phase, no more electrical stimuli were presented and…

Evaluating Accessibility and Usability of an Experimental Situational Awareness Room

2018

New advanced emergency management facilities such as a control room which is equipped with advanced ICT technologies should consider universal design principles and ensure the accessibility and usability of some important technical functions available in the room. This paper aims at evaluating the accessibility and usability of an experimental control room. This room has a flexible architecture, i.e., the information displays are interchangeable through drag-drop system on a control-panel. We used a complementary heuristic and user testing approach. A video analysis, open questionnaire and discussion with testers were applied to detect technology usage barriers. The results show that the pr…

Music as a Forum for Social-Emotional Health

2018

This chapter discusses social-emotional competence (SEC) as a psychological resource that can be supported by music engagement and that can explain music’s positive impact on mental health. Social-emotional competence is a set of psychological resources including social and emotional awareness, adaptive emotion regulation and coping, self-determination, resilience, and prosocial communication and interaction. This set of skills is fundamental for the healthy adaptation of an individual to the environment and highly impacts well-being. Thanks to its deep connections to emotion and social bonding, music can be seen as a forum for training, learning, and fostering such skills. In this chapter,…

Self-Awareness and Coping Style: Differential Effects of Mild Physical Exercise

1984

Publisher Summary This chapter presents a study focusing on self-awareness and coping style. By using a multidimensional model of activation (arousal), the long-term effect of mild exercise (10 minute treadmill walk) was investigated in the chapter. Additionally, the habitual coping style and self-awareness of the subjects were assessed using a questionnaire technique. N = 40 male and female introductory psychology students served as subjects. The session for each subject lasted two hours with measures taken every 10 minutes on the self-report dimensions of the activation–deactivation adjective checklist and physiological indicators, such as heart rate, pulse volume amplitude, and skin cond…
