This work focuses on the study of the meanings conveyed by two visual perception verbs (mirar and veure) in Central Catalan within the theoretical framework of cognitive semantics. Our objective is twofold: (i) to analyze and describe them in order to establish metaphorical and metonymic semantic projections; and (ii) to determine the intralinguistic distribution of the non-prototypical meanings of these verbs. Cartesian Psychology – Could There Be One?

The chapter examines what it would mean to talk about “psychology” in Descartes’ terms and argues that within the Cartesian framework we cannot really formulate the questions that are posed by contemporary psychologists. This results from the fact that psychological topics can be found on all three levels of Cartesian science: in metaphysics, in physics and finally in the applied sciences, such as medicine and morals. The aim is to show that the sensory and vegetative functions are often taken together by Descartes. In this brief study we will carefully analyze the uses of arribar and aplegar in mediaeval language from Curial e Güelfa. Our goal is to discover when and up to which extent both verbs, arribar and aplegar, share their meaning during the first half of the 15th century, in order to shed light on the current situation of Valencian. At the same time, we will contrast the datum of this anonymous text with former, later and contemporary works from the datum of Corpus Informatitzat del Català Antic (CICA: 2007).

This study addresses the deep level of morphological variation, of morphological variation strictly speaking. We study the situation of plurals in the «Curial e Güelfa» and, by extension, in the Catalan of the 15th century, analyzing particularly the possible subordinating factors of the distribution of plurals -es and -os of masculine words that finish in -s. The situation of plurals helps to confirm the dating of the novel in the middle of the 15th century. On the other hand, in the section of inflection of gender, the presence of forms that confirm the classicism of the novel is evident, as well as some Valencian preferences.

Este trabajo analiza, a partir de los testimonios personales ofrecidos por un grupo de inmigrantes de la posguerra, el significado que estos sujetos históricos le han dado y le dan al concepto de identidad. En tal sentido, se ha buscado rastrear a través de entrevistas orales, cuál es el sentimiento de los inmigrantes con respecto a su identidad: se sienten ¿inmigrantes? ¿Extranjeros?, ¿Argentinos? Se parte de la idea de identidad como una construcción en la que es necesario comprender no sólo en su relación con el otro sino también como una alteridad propia.
