The relationship between the dietary inflammatory index and prevalence of radiographic symptomatic osteoarthritis: data from the Osteoarthritis Initi…
2017
Purpose: To investigate whether higher dietary inflammatory index (DII ® ) scores were associated with higher prevalence of radiographic symptomatic knee osteoarthritis in a large cohort of North American people from the Osteoarthritis Initiative database. Methods: A total of 4358 community-dwelling participants (2527 females; mean age 61.2 years) from the Osteoarthritis Initiative were identified. DII ® scores were calculated using the validated Block Brief 2000 Food-Frequency Questionnaire and scores were categorized into quartiles. Knee radiographic symptomatic osteoarthritis was diagnosed clinically and radiologically. The strength of association between divided into quartiles (DII ® ) …
Dietary magnesium intake and fracture risk: data from a large prospective study
2017
AbstractResearch considering the relationship between dietary Mg and osteoporosis as well as fractures are sparse and conflicting. We therefore aimed to investigate Mg intake and the onset of fractures in a large cohort of American men and women involved in the Osteoarthritis Initiative over a follow-up period of 8 years. Dietary Mg intake (including that derived from supplementation) was evaluated through a FFQ at baseline and categorised using sex-specific quintiles (Q); osteoporotic fractures were evaluated through self-reported history. Overall, 3765 participants (1577 men; 2071 women) with a mean age of 60·6 (sd9·1) years were included. During follow-up, 560 individuals (198 men and 36…
Is a model of stratified exercise therapy by physical therapists in primary care feasible in patients with knee osteoarthritis? : a mixed methods stu…
2020
OBJECTIVES: To explore the feasibility of a newly developed model of stratified exercise therapy in primary care for patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA).DESIGN: Mixed method design (process, outcome and qualitative evaluation).SETTING: Six physical therapy practices in primary care around Amsterdam.PARTICIPANTS: Fifty eligible patients with knee OA, visiting one of the participating physical therapists (PTs).INTERVENTION: Patients were allocated to a subgroup based on a simple stratification tool and received subgroup-specific, protocolized, 4-month, exercise therapy.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Feasibility of this model of stratified exercise therapy was explored by multiple process parameter…
PAPA and FMF in two siblings: possible amplification of clinical presentation? A case report
2019
Abstract Background Familial Mediterranean Fever is a monogenic autoinflammatory disease, typically characterized by recurrent attacks of fever, serositis, aphthous of oral mucosa, erythema. “Pyogenic arthritis, pyoderma gangrenosum and acne syndrome” is a rare autoinflammatory disease with variable expression and typically involving joints and skin. Both the diseases are linked by the overproduction of IL-1. Case presentation We report on the case of two siblings affected by recurrent attacks of fever, oral aphthous stomatitis, abdominal pain, arthritis, undefined dermatitis at the hands, associated with increased AST, ALT, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, serum amyloid …
Patient-reported impact of spondyloarthritis on work disability and working life: the ATLANTIS survey
2016
Background The aim was to establish how patients experience the impact of spondyloarthritis (SpA) on work disability and working life. Methods The survey was performed in 17/20 regions in Italy (1 January to 31 March 2013). A multiple-choice questionnaire was published on the official website of the sponsor - the National Association of Rheumatic Patients (ANMAR) - and hard-copies were distributed at outpatient clinics for rheumatic patients. Results Respondents (n = 770) were of both sexes (56 % men), educated (62 % at high school or more), of working age (75 % aged ≤60 years), and affected by SpA. The most common types diagnosed were ankylosing spondylitis (AS) (39 %) and psoriatic arthri…
Identification of Novel pro-α2(IX) Collagen Gene Mutations in Two Families with Distinctive Oligo-Epiphyseal Forms of Multiple Epiphyseal Dysplasia
1999
Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) is a genetically heterogeneous disorder with marked clinical and radiographic variability. Traditionally, the mild "Ribbing" and severe "Fairbank" types have been used to define a broad phenotypic spectrum. Mutations in the gene encoding cartilage oligomeric-matrix protein have been shown to result in several types of MED, whereas mutations in the gene encoding the alpha2 chain of type IX collagen (COL9A2) have so far been found only in two families with the Fairbank type of MED. Type IX collagen is a heterotrimer of pro-alpha chains derived from three distinct genes-COL9A1, COL9A2, and COL9A3. In this article, we describe two families with distinctive ol…
Knee osteoarthritis and risk of hypertension: A longitudinal cohort study
2018
Whilst previous research has indicated an association between osteoarthritis and cardiovascular disease, it remains unclear whether people with osteoarthritis are at greater risk of developing hypertension. The aim of this study was to answer this uncertainity. We used the data of the Osteoarhritis Iniative, an ongoing public and private longitudinal study including people at higher risk of osteoarthritis or having knee osteoarthritis. Knee osteoarthritis was defined through radiological and clinical assessment. Incident hypertension was defined as a systolic blood pressure >140 mmHg and/or a diastolic value >90 mmHg. Multivariate Cox’s regression analyses were constructed where the p…
Validity and reproducibility of the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) questionnaire for the measurement of the physical activity level i…
2014
Background The need for valid and reproducible questionnaires to routinely assess the physical activity level of patients after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is of particular concern in clinical settings. Aims of this study were to evaluate the validity and reproducibility of the physical activity scale for the elderly (PASE) questionnaire in TKA patients, with a particular view on gender differences. Methods A total of 50 elderly patients (25 women and 25 men aged 70 ± 6 years) following primary unilateral TKA were recruited. The reproducibility was evaluated by administering the PASE questionnaire during two occasions separated by 7 days. The construct (criterion) validity was investigate…
Fall-related injuries among initially 75- and 80-year old people during a 10-year follow-up.
2007
The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence, type, scene and seasonal variation of fall related injuries, and the impact of socio-economic factors, mobility limitation, and the most common diseases on the risk of injurious falls over a 10-year follow-up. Elderly residents of Jyvaskyla, Finland, aged initially 75 and 80 years, took part in the study in 1989-1990. The health and functional capacity assessments were carried out at the baseline. Injurious falls were monitored over a 10-year period. The rate of injurious falls per thousand person-years was 188 among women and 78 among men. Of all fall-related diagnoses, head injuries comprised 32%, upper limb injuries 27% and hip inj…
Analysis of early biochemical markers and regulation by tin protoporphyrin IX in a model of spontaneous osteoarthritis
2011
Abstract Age-related changes in joint tissues lead to osteoarthritis (OA). Detection of early changes in OA patients may help to initiate treatments before the establishment of irreversible joint destruction. STR/ort mice develop with age a severe degenerative joint disease that resembles human OA thus allowing the investigation of biochemical markers as well as new treatments in an accelerated time frame. We have analyzed the changes in serum levels of different mediators during the early phases of idiopathic OA in STR/ort mice. Serum levels of matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) but not those of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin(IL)-1β, IL-17 or prostaglandin E 2 correlated with histopa…
