Redefining habits and linking habits with other implicit processes

2019

In their commentaries on Hagger (2019), Gardner, Rebar, and Lally (2019) and Phillips (2019) provide welcome debate on the conceptualization and operation of habits in physical activity. In this response, I extend their comments by (i) calling for a redefining of habits to encompass contemporary views of habit, and (ii) suggesting that descriptions of physical activity habits should make reference to their relations with other implicit constructs that reflect automatic processes. Specifically, I contend that extant definitions of habits for complex behaviors like physical activity should move away from definitions of unitary responses to specific cues or contexts, and, focus on ‘macro’ expr…

The human side of leadership: exploring the relationship between servant leadership, organisational facilitators and happiness at work

2018

Although human resource management (HRM) research has established a significant relationship between leadership styles and different attitudinal outcomes, few studies have considered the important role of organisational facilitators as a more proximal outcome of servant leadership to explain happiness at work (HAW). This paper explores the relationships between servant leadership, organisational facilitators and HAW, based on the leader-member exchange (LMX) and job-demands resources (JD-R) theories. Individual-level analyses from a sample of 189 machine operators revealed that organisational facilitators fully mediate the relationship between servant leadership and HAW. The discussion revi…

A Novel Systolic Parallel Hardware Architecture for the FPGA Acceleration of Feedforward Neural Networks

2019

New chips for machine learning applications appear, they are tuned for a specific topology, being efficient by using highly parallel designs at the cost of high power or large complex devices. However, the computational demands of deep neural networks require flexible and efficient hardware architectures able to fit different applications, neural network types, number of inputs, outputs, layers, and units in each layer, making the migration from software to hardware easy. This paper describes novel hardware implementing any feedforward neural network (FFNN): multilayer perceptron, autoencoder, and logistic regression. The architecture admits an arbitrary input and output number, units in la…

The reasoned action approach applied to health behavior: Role of past behavior and tests of some key moderators using meta-analytic structural equati…

2018

Abstract Rationale The reasoned action approach (RAA) is a social cognitive model that outlines the determinants of intentional behavior. Primary and meta-analytic studies support RAA predictions for multiple health behaviors. However, including past behavior as a predictor in the RAA may attenuate model effects. Direct effects of past behavior on behavior may reflect non-conscious processes whereas indirect effects of past behavior through social cognitive variables may represent reasoned processes. Objective The present study extended a previous meta-analysis of the RAA by including effects of past behavior. The analysis also tested effects of candidate moderators of model predictions: be…

Today Is My Day: Analysis of the Awareness Campaigns’ Impact on Functional Diversity in the Press, on Google, and on Twitter

2021

(1) Every day, people with functional diversity face different kinds of difficulties that pose a barrier to their social inclusion. These difficulties often go unnoticed by most citizens. Social networks are a powerful tool to sensitize the population. With this objective, different organizations such as associations, federations, foundations, and other institutions have promoted campaigns through the celebration of world days for different types of functional diversity. This research aims to monitor and analyze the impact of these social campaigns in Spain, including Asperger’s syndrome, rare diseases, Down syndrome, autism, hearing and visual impairment, cerebral palsy, dyslexia, ADHD, sp…

Clinical Sociology and Moral Hegemony

2013

The article presents a critique of a dominant way of analysing gang conflict in Norwegian sociology. The research in question uses a rather crude Marxist analysis that could somehow fit any gang conflict in the country. However, this kind of analysis was gradually put in question first by professor Ottar Brox and his criticism of the moral hegemony by a group of Marxists gathered around the publication “Klassekampen” (“Class Struggle”). Then the analysis was challenged by gang-researchers who reached back to the classical study of Frederic M. Thrasher, finding the latter more fruitful for analysis. Antonio Gramsci (1891- 1937) who coined the term cultural hegemony used it to describe how a …

Mediaatioita : fenomenologisen marxismin mahdollisuus

2013

Tutkimukseni tehtävänä on selvittää, onko fenomenologian ja marxismin synteesi mahdollista. Käsittelen 1930-luvun taitteen Herbert Marcusen fenomenologista marxismia esimerkkinä synteesin mahdollisuudesta. Näiden perinteiden yhdistäminen vaatii kuitenkin ensin syventymistä Marcusen ajattelun pohjana toimiviin hegeliläisen ja weberiläisen marxismin perinteisiin sekä Martin Heideggerin muotoilemaan fenomenologiaan. Marxismissa on perinteisesti painottunut yhteiskunnallisten rakenteiden ja fenomenologiassa yksilöllisen elävän kokemuksen näkökulma. Tällaisten eriävien lähtökohtien takia ne on usein asetettu jopa vastakohtaisiksi perinteiksi. Oleelliseksi kysymykseksi nouseekin sekä marxismin et…
