This chapter considers Bernardi’s contribution to two different processes of traditional institutions revival in East Africa. He was the main ethnographer of the Mugwe, a traditional dignitary of the Meru of Kenya, that ceased to exist soon after his field work. He used the attribution ‘failing prophet’ in the title of the first edition of his book, changed into ‘blessing prophet’ in the following edition, having in the meanwhile registered a growing symbolic consideration for the institution. Stochastic dynamics of leukemic cells under an intermittent targeted therapy

The evolutionary dynamics of cancerous cell populations in a model of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is investigated in the presence of an intermittent targeted therapy. Cancer development and progression is modeled by simulating the stochastic evolution of initially healthy cells which can experience genetic mutations and modify their reproductive behavior, becoming leukemic clones. Front line therapy for the treatment of patients affected by CML is based on the administration of tyrosine kinase inhibitors, namely imatinib (Gleevec) or, more recently, dasatinib or nilotinib. Abstract CML is an uncontrolled proliferation of bone marrow myeloid cells driven by the constitutively active fusion product tyrosine kinase BCR/ABL. Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature, is newly recognized as a factor in CML progression. Exosomes, released by a broad spectrum of cells, are microvesicles that play an important role in cell-to-cell communication both in physiological and pathological conditions. Analisti e commentatori hanno individuato nella produzione letteraria di Meli la cellula neuronale del dibattito tardo romantico sull’identità nazionale siciliana. Nonostante sia una parte minima delle sue opere, la sua produzione teatrale, espressione completa della sua poetica, ad oggi è stata esplorata in maniera marginale. L’articolo mira a comprendere la prassi drammaturgica e poetica della farsetta Li palermitani in festa, che presenta venature equivalenti a quelle rintracciabili nella commedia riformata da Goldoni, ma anche i solchi ben marcati della tradizione della Commedia dell’Arte siciliana, e che riformò il genere delle vastasate nell’ultimo scorcio del XVIII secolo.

Re-canalization of cerebral vessels in ischemic stroke is pivotal to rescue dysfunctional brain areas that are exposed to moderate hypoxia within the penumbra from irreversible cell death. Goal of the present study was to evaluate the effect of moderate hypoxia followed by reoxygenation (MHR) on the evolution of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity in brain endothelial cells (BEC). BBB integrity was assessed in BEC in vitro and in microvessels of the guinea pig whole brain in situ preparation.
