EVALUATION OF LOW-ENERGY EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCK-WAVE APPLICATION FOR TREATMENT OF CHRONIC PLANTAR FASCIITIS

2002

Background: Although the application of low-energy extracorporeal shock waves to treat musculoskeletal disor- ders is controversial, there has been some limited, short-term evidence of its effectiveness for the treatment of chronic plantar fasciitis. Methods: From 1993 to 1995, a prospective, two-tailed, randomized, controlled, observer-blinded pilot trial was performed to assess whether three applications of 1000 impulses of low-energy shock waves (Group I) led to a su- perior clinical outcome when compared with three applications of ten impulses of low-energy shock waves (Group II) in patients with intractable plantar heel pain. The sample size was 112. The main outcome measure was patien…

SEVERE STREPTOCOCCUS PYOGENES SURGICAL SITE INFECTION AFTER INGUINAL LIPOMA REMOVAL

2019

Surgical site infections (SSI) are a common cause of health care-associated infections. They are localized in the surgical incision site and can lead to deep tissues spreading. Among the wide spectrum of SSIs , we will consider specifically group A streptococcus cellulitis. This kind of infection can have a negative evolution and result in necrotizing fasciitis (NF), previously known as streptococcal gangrene. The term NF indicates a rare necrotizing infection involving any of the soft tissue layers that still have a high mortality rate from 7% to 76%. An early diagnosis and urgent treatment are key to ensuring the safety of the patients’ life. A 64-year-old man underwent a complete surgica…

Brief History of Computer Art and New Media Art in Latvia

2011

The Soviet and particularly Latvian computer art is not a well-known topic of digital art history. This paper attempts to analyze this computer art in context of the 20th century art, considering the political circumstances in Soviet Union. At the turn of the 21st century after gaining the independence new media art examples and collaboration between scientists, computer scientists, software programmers and the artists are to be found in Latvia. Some recent media art events are mentioned from this viewpoint.

Fatal necrotising fasciitis associated with intramuscular injection of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs after uncomplicated endoscopic polypectom…

2007

Summary Necrotising fasciitis is a life-threatening infection of the superficial muscle fascia and the adjacent deep layer of subcutaneous tissue that is often fatal. A 46-year-old woman was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) three days after an uncomplicated endoscopic polypectomy because of necrotising fasciitis of left tight, buttock and retroperitoneal space and septic shock. Six hours after the polypectomy she was given an intramuscular injection of ketorolac in the left tight because of moderate low abdominal pain. Twelve and 24h later she was treated with another two intramuscular injection of diclofenac in the left tight for severe pains in the left hip joint region. The shoc…

A software tool via web for the statistical data analysis; R-php

2007

The spread of Internet and the growing demand of services from the web users have changed and are still changing the way to organize the work or the study. Nowadays, the main part of information and many services are on the web and the software is going toward the same direction: in fact, the use of software implemented via web is ever-increasing, with a client-server logic that enables the “centralized” use of software installed on a server. In this paper we describe the Structure and the running of R-php, an environment for statistical analysis, freely accessible and attainable through the World Wide Web, based on the statistical environment R. R-php is based on two modules: a base module…

An Emotional Talking Head for a Humoristic Chatbot

2011

The interest about enhancing the interface usability of applications and entertainment platforms has increased in last years. The research in human-computer interaction on conversational agents, named also chatbots, and natural language dialogue systems equipped with audio-video interfaces has grown as well. One of the most pursued goals is to enhance the realness of interaction of such systems. For this reason they are provided with catchy interfaces using humanlike avatars capable to adapt their behavior according to the conversation content. This kind of agents can vocally interact with users by using Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and Text To Speech (TTS) systems; besides they can c…

Necrotizing Soft Tissue Fasciitis after Intramuscular Injection

2018

Necrotizing soft tissue fasciitis (NSTIs) or necrotizing fasciitis is an infrequent and serious infection. Herein, we describe the clinical course of a female patient who received a diagnosis of NSTIs after gluteus intramuscular injection. We also report the results of our review of published papers from 1997 to 2017. Since now, 19 cases of NSTIs following intramuscular injections have been described. We focus on the correlation between intramuscular injection and NSTIs onset, especially in immunosuppressed patients treated with corticosteroids, suffering from chronic diseases or drug addicted. Intramuscular injections can provoke severe tissue trauma, representing local portal of infection…

Fasciitis nodularis pseudosarcomatosa

2004

Low-energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy for painful heel: a prospective controlled single-blind study.

1996

The aim of this prospective single-blind pilot study was to explore the pain-alleviating effect of low-energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in painful heel associated with inferior calcaneal spurs. Thirty patients who suffered from persistent symptoms for more than 12 months qualified for low-energy ESWT and were assigned at random to two groups, real or simulated ESWT. Before beginning the treatment, any other therapy was stopped for a period of 6 weeks. The shock waves were applied by an experimental device allowing exact localization through an integrated fluoroscopy unit. Patients were treated three times at weekly intervals. Each time 1000 impulses of 0.06 mJ/mm2 were given …
