Life-history constraints and warning signal expression in an arctiid moth
2007
Summary 1 Traditionally, large pattern elements in conspicuous warning signals are assumed to be selected by predation because increasing signal strength enhances education and avoidance of predators. However, variation in the colour pattern of a warningly coloured species often exists even within a location, and many warning signals have relatively small pattern elements. This suggests that there must be opposing selection pressures that can constrain warning signal expression, resulting in variation in warning signals as well as suboptimal signals for predator education. 2 We quantified the variation in the warning signal of Parasemia plantaginis-moth larvae. With a full-sib rearing exper…
Design and evaluation of self-healing solutions for future wireless networks
2016
This doctoral dissertation is aimed at the creation of comprehensive and innovative Self-Organizing Networks (SON) solutions for the Network Management of future wireless networks. More specifically, the thesis focuses on the Self-Healing (SH) part of SON. Faults can appear at several functional areas of a complex cellular network. However, the most critical domain from a fault management viewpoint is the Radio Access Network (RAN). The fault management of network elements is not only difficult but also imposes high costs both in capital investment (CAPEX) and operational expenditures (OPEX). The SON concept has emerged with the goal to foster automation and to reduce human involvement in man…
From needs to competencies : a case study on the integration of a rights based approach into NGO practises
2010
The objective of this qualitative case study is to provide knowledge on the possibilities of incorporating a rights based approach (RBA) into practises of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the context of development and children. The study is confined to examine the possibilities of RBA in realising children’s rights within the child sponsorship programme (CSP) of a Finnish NGO, Fida International (Fida), and the conceptualisation of the child in regard to different approaches. The theoretical framework is built on contemporary development discourse concerning the approximation of human rights and development as well as the underlying reasons for the emergence of RBA as a contributio…
On Equal Terms? : On Implementing Infants’ Cultural Rights
2020
How can we implement infants’ cultural rights? Is there even reason to confer such rights to non-speaking children, or is it enough that we recognise slightly older children as culturally active individuals? Acknowledging children’s intellectual capacities and their right to be heard in matters that concern them are important threads in research on children and ideals of childrearing during the last hundred years. This development is parallel with the one leading from the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1923 to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. The spirit of human rights that informs these documents cannot be underestimated. Yet reading the Convention carefully…
Accumulation of disparity in physical activity in old age
2012
Background and aims: The level of physical activity often declines in old age, although many older people would like to be more active than what they are capable of. This leads to unmet physical activity need, the feeling that one’s level of physical activity is inadequate, which is a manifestation of disparity in physical activity in old age. The accumulation of risk factors, including mobility limitations, low socioeconomic status (SES) and lack of social support may increase disparity in physical activity. The aim of this study was to investigate how the accumulation of risk factors is associated with unmet physical activity need in older community-living people. Methods: The study was b…
Finnish-Chinese intercultural negotiation : power positioning and search for common ground
2018
‘Rising China’ is a term that has come to refer to China’s march to being number one, the speed of its economic growth, and its investment around the world during last two decades. In Finland, government agencies have been established to promote investment, trade, and co-operation with China, while regional and local governments are also actively involved. Meanwhile, much of the world is now competing for the attention of China, so the power dynamic is tending to shift in favour of the Chinese. This developing context has been examined in previous studies primarily from the perspectives of politics, economics, and management studies. The overarching aim of this study is to investigate emerg…
Kansalaisjärjestöjen elävä tila : tarkastelussa Mannerheimin Lastensuojeluliitto ry:n ja Pelastakaa Lapset ry:n lausunnot ja kannanotot
2010
Tutkielmassani olennaista on kansalaisjärjestöjen ja tarkemmin Mannerheimin Lastensuojeluliitto ry:n (MLL) sekä Pelastakaa Lapset ry:n yhteiskunnallisen aseman tarkastelu järjestöjen omasta näkökulmasta. Tarkastelu painottuu julkisen ja kolmannen sektorin väliseen suhteeseen. Hahmotan kansalaisjärjestöjen asemaa suhteessa valtiovaltaan tutkimalla kansalaisjärjestöjen kommentointia valtiovallan toimiin ja esityksiin sekä järjestöjen omia kokemuksia niiden oikeudesta toimia valtiovallan rinnalla. Tutkielman aineiston muodostaa Mannerheimin Lastensuojeluliiton ja Pelastakaa Lasten lausunnot ja kannanotot vuodelta 2008. Lisäksi olen käyttänyt järjestöjen hyvinvointiohjelmia, toimintakertomuksia…
„Werbungen versprechen ja oft mehr, als das Produkt hält.“: Eine Studie über die Pluralbildung des Lexems Werbung
2016
Koska ongelma perustuu sanojen monikonmuodostukseen, pohjaa tutkielma teoria-taustansa monikonmuodostukseen. Erityisemm…
Moving forward sustainably : material and social conditions of electronic waste management in Nigeria
2018
This dissertation focuses on understanding the social material interaction between e-waste and e-scrappers for sustainable management of e-waste. Previous studies mainly concentrate on the detrimental environmental impact of e-scrappers activities, the economic and political influences of e-waste on the e-scrappers, the material flow of e-waste and the exportation of valuable e-waste extracts from highly industrialized countries to less industrialized countries. The aim of the dissertation is therefore to extend the scope of the previous studies by investigating the social material interaction between e-scrappers and e-waste. To achieve this aim, this study examines the following research q…
