Unpacking the link between family socioeconomic status and civic engagement during the transition to adulthood: Do work values play a role?
2017
We investigated whether the link between family-of-origin socioeconomic status (SES) and civic engagement in young adulthood is mediated by youth’s work values, i.e., the desired characteristics of their current or future jobs. We used data from a Finnish study: 2004 (age 16–18, NT1 = 1,301); 2011 (age 23–25, N T2 = 1,096); and 2014 (age 25–27, NT3 = 1,138). A lower family SES in 2004 was negatively related to youth’s civic engagement in 2014. Lower family SES predicted the importance that youth attached to extrinsic job rewards (e.g., good pay) in 2011, but not the importance of intrinsic job rewards (e.g., learning opportunities). Extrinsic work values, in turn, predicted lower civic enga…
Nuorten koulussa kokeman sosiaalisen tuen yhteys subjektiiviseen sosiaaliseen asemaan ja liikkumiseen
2021
Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää nuorten kouluyhteisössä syntyvien kokemusten ja liikkumisen välisiä yhteyksiä. Kokemuksellisuutta tarkastellaan nuorten kokeman sosiaalisen tuen sekä subjektiivisen sosiaalisen aseman näkökulmista. Sosiaalinen tuki koostuu yläkoululaisten kokemuksista opettajan ja oppilaan välisistä suhteista, oppilaiden keskinäisistä suhteista sekä vanhemmilta saadusta tuesta. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin sähköisenä kyselynä keväällä 2015, ja tutkimukseen osallistui 2 026 yläkoululaista. Nuoret jaettiin kuuteen ryhmään sen mukaan, millaista sosiaalista tukea he kokivat saavansa. Vahvaksi koettu tuki yhdistyi korkeammaksi koettuun sosiaaliseen asemaan koulussa. Vanhemmil…
The Pandemic and Its Shadow. Feminist Theoretical and Art Discourses on Trauma and Community in COVID-19
2022
This article explores the philosophical and psychoanalytic trajectories of conceptualizing the Covid-19 pandemic as ‘collective trauma’, and considers what would be the risks, but also productive possibilities, of such a theoretical move. the context of this inquiry is the so-called ‘shadow pandemic’ – the drastic increase in domestic violence globally, which accompanied introduction of lockdowns as a measure of containing the impact of Covid-19 on public health infrastructures. For the women who were victims of violence during the lockdowns, the discourse of ‘sheltering’, ‘isolation’ and ‘staying home’ has carried antithetical meanings to the o6cially sanctioned ones – those were meanings …

Predation on Multiple Trophic Levels Shapes the Evolution of Pathogen Virulence
2009
The pathogen virulence is traditionally thought to co-evolve as a result of reciprocal selection with its host organism. In natural communities, pathogens and hosts are typically embedded within a web of interactions with other species, which could affect indirectly the pathogen virulence and host immunity through trade-offs. Here we show that selection by predation can affect both pathogen virulence and host immune defence. Exposing opportunistic bacterial pathogen Serratia marcescens to predation by protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila decreased its virulence when measured as host moth Parasemia plantaginis survival. This was probably because the bacterial anti-predatory traits were traded o…

”Mene kotiin kasvamaan” : pääministerin julkisuuskuva ja misogynia
2023
Conforming to and resisting imposed identities : An autoethnography on academic motherhood
2022
Purpose This research attempts to make sense of the experiences of two academic women who become mothers. Design/methodology/approach This paper is an autoethnography. Applying the autoethnographic method allows us to discuss cultural phenomena through personal reflections and experiences. Our autoethnographic reflections illustrate our struggles and attempts of resistance within discursive spaces where motherhood and our identity as academics intersect. Findings Our personal experiences combined with theoretical elaborations illuminate how the role of the mother continues to be dominated by such gendered discursive practices that conflict with the work role. Once women become mothers, they…
Socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent health complaints : a multilevel latent class analysis in 45 countries
2022
AbstractOur study evaluated the relationship between adolescent health complaints and socioeconomic position in 45 countries. Data are from the 2017/2018 international Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey which used proportionate sampling among adolescents aged 11 to 15 years old (n=228,979). Multilevel, multinomial regression analysis assessed the association between the multilevel latent classes with socioeconomic status (SES; at the household and country level). Three distinct latent classes were identified: No Complaints, Psychological Complaints, and a Physical and Psychological Complaints class; where, low household SES was highest for the physical and psychological complai…
