H2O, H2, HF, F2 and F2O nuclear magnetic shielding constants and indirect nuclear spin–spin coupling constants (SSCCs) in the BHandH/pcJ‐n and BHandH…

2009

Good performance of segmented contracted basis sets XZP, where X = D, T, Q and 5, for obtaining H2O, H2, HF, F2 and F2O nuclear isotropic shielding constants in the BHandH Kohn–Sham basis set limit was shown. The results of two‐ and three‐parameter complete basis set limit extrapolation schemes were compared with experimental results, earlier literature data and benchmark ab initio results. Similar convergence patterns of shieldings obtained from calculations using general purpose XZP basis sets and from polarization‐consistent basis sets pcS‐n and pcJ‐n, where n = 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4, designed to accurately predict magnetic properties were observed. On the contrary, the SSCCs were more sensit…

Polynomial Spline-Wavelets

2015

This chapter presents wavelets in the spaces of polynomial splines. The wavelets’ design is based on the Zak transform, which provides an integral representation of spline-wavelets. The exponential wavelets which participate in the integral representation are counterparts of the exponential splines that were introduced in Chap. 4. Fast algorithms for the wavelet transforms of splines are presented. Generators of spline-wavelet spaces are described, such as the B-wavelets and their duals and the Battle-Lemarie wavelets whose shifts form orthonormal bases of the spline-wavelet spaces.

OPTIMIZATIONS FOR TENSORIAL BERNSTEIN–BASED SOLVERS BY USING POLYHEDRAL BOUNDS

2010

The tensorial Bernstein basis for multivariate polynomials in n variables has a number 3n of functions for degree 2. Consequently, computing the representation of a multivariate polynomial in the tensorial Bernstein basis is an exponential time algorithm, which makes tensorial Bernstein-based solvers impractical for systems with more than n = 6 or 7 variables. This article describes a polytope (Bernstein polytope) with a number of faces, which allows to bound a sparse, multivariate polynomial expressed in the canonical basis by solving several linear programming problems. We compare the performance of a subdivision solver using domain reductions by linear programming with a solver using a c…

Scene-based noise reduction on a smart camera

2012

International audience; Raw output data from CMOS image sensors tends to exhibit significant noise called Fixed-Pattern Noise (FPN) due to on-die variations between pixel photodetectors. FPN is often corrected by subtracting its value, estimated through calibration, from the sensor's raw signal. This paper introduces an on-line scene-based technique for an improved FPN compensation which does not rely on calibration, and hence is more robust to the dynamic changes in the FPN which may occur slowly over time. Development has been done with a special emphasis on real-time hardware implementation on a FPGA-based smart camera. Experimental results on different scenes are depicted showing that t…

Uses and limits of thermal indices: the case of Sahel

2015

International audience; Our main goal here is to analyse extreme heat waves (HWs) in the Sahel (13°N-18°N; 16°W-30°E), using different thermal indices. In the ACASIS project funded bythe French “Agence Nationale de la Recherche”, HWs analyses are characterized forthe first time during the hottest season in the Sahel, using the Global Summary of theDay (GSOD) synoptic observations during April-May-June 1973-2013. Such extremehigh temperatures are usually defined by 3 criteria: 1/ Their low probability ofoccurrence: less than the 10% of the days. The use of absolute thresholds, associated with heat budget and physiological impacts, could be an alternative(Seneviratne et al., 2012). 2/ Their in…

Role of polysialic acid (PSA) in the control of food intake and body weight

2013

Hypothalamus plays a major role in the regulation of energy homeostasis by the presence of neural circuits controlling food intake. These circuits are plastic and can be rewired during adulthood. We hypothesized that synaptic plasticity can occur during physiological conditions. We have shown that synaptic contact on hypothalamic anorexigen POMC neurons are rewired in mouse upon high fat diet (HFD). This synaptic process is mandatory to adjust energy intake and requires the glycan PSA (polysialic acid). PSA promotes synaptic plasticity in the brain by the weakening of cell-to-cell interaction by addition on NCAM (neural cell adhesion molecule). We hypothesized that a defect in brain synapti…

Host manipulation of a freshwater crustacean (Gammarus roeseli) by an acanthocephalan parasite (Polymorphus minutus) in a biological invasion context.

2006

8 pages; International audience; Several gammarid species serve as intermediate hosts for the acanthocephalan parasite Polymorphus minutus. This parasite influences gammarid behaviour in order to favour transmission to its ultimate host, generally a bird. We investigated this host manipulation in Gammarus roeseli, a gammarid species introduced in France 150 years ago which now coexists with several exotic species from different origins. In the field, vertical distribution of G. roeseli revealed a higher proportion of infected individuals close to the water's surface and the size distribution of infected gammarids revealed predation pressure on infected individuals. However, under laboratory…

Manipulative parasites may not alter intermediate host distribution but still enhance their transmission: field evidence for increased vulnerability …

2013

SUMMARYBehavioural alterations induced by parasites in their intermediate hosts can spatially structure host populations, possibly resulting in enhanced trophic transmission to definitive hosts. However, such alterations may also increase intermediate host vulnerability to non-host predators. Parasite-induced behavioural alterations may thus vary between parasite species and depend on each parasite definitive host species. We studied the influence of infection with 2 acanthocephalan parasites (Echinorhynchus truttae and Polymorphus minutus) on the distribution of the amphipod Gammarus pulex in the field. Predator presence or absence and predator species, whether suitable definitive host or …
