Platelet Cut-Off For Anticoagulant Therapy In Cancer Patients With Venous Thromboembolism and Thrombocytopenia: An Expert Opinion Based On RAND/UCLA …
2013
Abstract Introduction Cancer-related Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) requires treatment with Low Molecular Weight Heparin (LMWH), which is more effective and safer than warfarin; however, the risk of major hemorrhage still remains clinically relevant (up to 5%). This rate is even higher in case of impaired hemostasis, such as during thrombocytopenia (due to myelosuppression or chemo-therapy) where the bleeding risk is directly related to the platelet count level. At the present, the best management of adult patients with acute or non-acute cancer-related VTE during thrombocytopenia is uncertain. Objective To develop a consensus about the platelet cut-off for a safe LMWH administration in cance…
Dental management in patients with hemostasis alteration
2011
Haemostasis is a mechanism that, through different interdependent biologic processes, has the purpose of ensuring the integrity and permeability of the circulatory system. Hemostasis term means prevention the loss of blood. Interventions or treatments in the oral cavity, in particular those with a possibility of bleeding, represent a risk for patients with disorders of hemostasis. Prevention is the key to avoid bleeding complications after oral surgical procedures and therefore it is essential a detailed medical history of the patient. The appropriate diagnosis and treatment in patients with disorders of hemostasis, depends directly in the understanding of hemostasis standard mechanisms. Em…
Diagnostik und operative Therapie von Phäochromozytomen und Paragangliomen
2010
Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas are rare chromaffin tumours that represent an exceptional challenge for the surgeon because of the concomitant secretion of catecholamines. Recent findings on the genetic background of hereditary tumours have challenged the rule of the 10 % -tumour and significantly changed the requirements for preoperative work-up and surgical strategy. Early detection of malignant growth or multiple hereditary tumours is the goal of imaging techniques such as CT/MRI, (123)I-MIBG-(SPECT) or (18)F-DOPA-PET. However, in the absence of metastasis, reliable differentiation between -benign and malignant growth is preoperatively and even histopathologically rarely possible. A…
Nastanak i liječenje gigantskih kamenaca ileocekalnog urinskog spremnika u pacijenta liječenog cistektomijom zbog intersticijskog cistitisa: prikaz s…
2021
Poslijeoperacijs…
Aulogous fibrin sealant (Vivostat(®)) in the neurosurgical practice: Part II: Vertebro-spinal procedures.
2015
Background Epidural hematomas, cerebrospinal fluid fistula, and spinal infections are challenging postoperative complications following vertebro-spinal procedures. We report our preliminary results using autologous fibrin sealant as both fibrin glue and a hemostatic during these operations. Methods Prospectively, between January 2013 and March 2015, 68 patients received an autologous fibrin sealant prepared with the Vivostat(®) system applied epidurally to provide hemostasis and to seal the dura. The surgical technique, time to bleeding control, and associated complications were recorded. Results Spinal procedures were performed in 68 patients utilizing autologous fibrin glue/Vivostat(®) to…
Sentinel-node biopsy in early stage ovarian cancer: a prospective multicentre study (SELLY)
2019
BackgroundSystematic para-aortic and bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy is included in the standard comprehensive surgical staging in presumed early epithelial ovarian cancer. No prospective randomized evidence suggests it has potential therapeutic value, and related morbidity is not negligible.Primary Objective(s)To assess sensitivity, safety, and feasibility of the sentinel lymph node technique in identifying the presence of lymph node metastases in patients with early stage epithelial ovarian cancer.Study HypothesisSentinel lymph node detection with indocyanine green can accurately predict nodal status in a cohort of women with early stage epithelial ovarian cancer.Trial DesignThe SELLY tr…
Bone Turnover Markers and Potential Correlation with Outcomes in Patients with Genitourinary Cancer (Renal and Bladder) and Bone Metastasis (Results …
2012
ABSTRACT Background Levels of bone turnover markers (BTM) might be correlated with outcome in terms of skeletal related events (SRE), disease progression and death. The aim of the study was to determine the possible correlation between BTM, disease progression, SREs and death in patients with genitourinary cancer and bone metastases (BM) treated with zoledronic acid (ZA). Methods Observational, prospective, multicenter study. Patients with genitourinary cancer (prostate, renal, bladder) and BM were included. BTM determined were: carboxiterminal telopeptide of type I collagen (β-CTX) and bone specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP) by ELISA (immunoenzymatic assay, IDS UK), and aminoterminal pro…

Chapter 23: Choline, a precursor of acetylcholine and phospholipids in the brain
1993
Publisher Summary The plasma level of free choline is remarkably constant at about 10 pM in animals and human. Ingestion of food, especially when rich in choline or lecithin, transiently elevates the plasma choline level up to 20 pM or more. In contrast, choline-deficient diet leads to a reduction of the plasma level by about 50%. Choline is considered an essential nutrient, which is predominantly supplied as phosphatidylcholine (lecithin). For a long time, neuroscientists have been intrigued by the fact that choline is a precursor for the biosynthesis of both acetylcholine (ACh) and phospholipids. For 50 years, lecithin has been marketed in Europe as a drug that was claimed to prevent exha…
Fructose diet induced short-term impairment of cone sensitivity and gene expression in rat retina
2012
National audience; Abstract: Purpose A high fructose diet has been widely used to trigger insulin resistance in rodent; insulin resistance is one of the major risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes. Thirty to 40% of diabetic patients develop diabetic retinopathy. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the short-term effect, at 1, 3, 5, 8 days, of a 60% fructose diet, on photoreceptor sensitivity and gene expression in the retina of Brown Norway rats. Methods: Flicker electroretinograms (8Hz) were recorded under anesthesia, from both eyes simultaneously in order to study sensitivity of photoreceptors. Then, rats were euthanized and enucleated. Retinae and posterior poles were collec…
