KLUM@GTAP: Introducing biophysical aspects of land-use decisions into a general equilibrium model: A coupling experiment
2006
In this paper the global agricultural land use model KLUM is coupled to an extended version of the computable general equilibrium model (CGE) GTAP in order to consistently assess the integrated impacts of climate change on global cropland allocation and its implication for economic development. The methodology is innovative as it introduces dynamic economic land-use decisions based also on the biophysical aspects of land into a state-of-the-art CGE; it further allows the projection of resulting changes in cropland patterns on a spatially more explicit level. A convergence test and illustrative future simulations underpin the robustness and potentials of the coupled system. Reference simulat…

Toward sustainable environmental quality: Priority research questions for Europe
2018
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals have been established to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals will require a healthy and productive environment. An understanding of the impacts of chemicals which can negatively impact environmental health is therefore essential to the delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals. However, current research on and regulation of chemicals in the environment tend to take a simplistic view and do not account for the complexity of the real world, which inhibits the way we manage chemicals. There is therefore an urgent need for a step change in the way we study and communic…

Kielitaitotavoitteet saavutettiin, mutta työskentelytavoissa ja asenteissa kehitettävää
2014
Opetushallitus arvioi keväällä 2013 perusopetuksen päättövaiheessa olleiden oppilaiden kielitaitoa A-ruotsissa ja neljässä tavallisimmin opiskellussa vieraassa kielessä. Arvioinnilla selvitettiin, miten opetussuunnitelman perusteissa (2004) ilmaistut oppimistavoitteet on saavutettu, ja mitkä oppilaan taustatekijät ja oppimisympäristön piirteet selittävät oppimistuloksia. Vaikka kielelliset tavoitteet saavutettiin pääosin hyvin, niin kehittämistarpeita havaittiin erityisesti oppituntien työtavoissa ja oppilaiden käsityksissä. nonPeerReviewed

This study explores the perceptions and practices of upper secondary school language teachers on differentiated assessment. The data were collected through a closed and open-ended questionnaire (n=48) and individual interviews with four teachers. The results show that the teachers used a variety of assessment methods, with a predominant emphasis on formative assessment. Although the teachers mentioned many differentiated assessment methods, they did not generally differentiate their assessments to a large extent. The teachers also focused mostly on low-achieving students and neglected adversely gifted students. The teachers seemed to follow the practice of having all students demonstrate th…
How do Finnish and Chinese students’ diverse pedagogical experiences shape feedback interpretation?
2023
Due to the dissemination of joint degree programmes in higher education, more students from different educational backgrounds are exposed to the same teaching and assessment without sharing a common pedagogical culture. Since this is relatively new in Finland, little is known about how students with diverse backgrounds experience assessment compared to their Finnish classmates and how this affects their overall performance. Having as a starting point an English for Specific Purposes course offered in Finland and China, this qualitative study focuses on the role of feedback through seventeen in-depth interviews. Themes such as grades and peer feedback were interpreted based on the educationa…

The feasibility of working memory tablet tasks in predicting scholastic skills in classroom settings
2019
Cognitive assessment in natural group settings facilitates data collection but poses threats to the validity. In this study, tablet‐based working memory (WM) tasks, the counting span, and reading span were used in predicting 12‐year‐old children's (N = 837) scholastic skills and fluid intelligence in a classroom with environmental noise. WM tasks had excellent internal consistency, correlated with scholastic skills, and accounted for more of the variance in cognitive performance (grade point average, fluid intelligence, scholastic skills) compared with individually administered (n = 190) digit span task. Furthermore, the multilevel analysis revealed that compared with the classrooms with no…
