What a New Model of Skeletal Homologies Tells Us About Asteroid Evolution1
2000
The Extraxial-Axial Theory (EAT) is applied to the body wall homologies of asteroids. Attempts to characterize major plate systems of asteroids as axial or extraxial, particularly those that are highly organized into series, can be problematic. However, the Optical Plate Rule (OPR) is instrumental in establishing that ambulacrals and terminals are axial. It is equally clear that the region aboral to the marginal frame is a part of the perforate extraxial body wall (with the possible exception of the centrodorsal, which is likely imperforate extraxial). Previously established EAT criteria, particularly those strongly rooted in the embryologically expressed boundary between axial and extraxia…
The workers' strike of 1963 at Tell Chuera: Persistence of colonial practices in Near Eastern archaeology?
2022
This case study appears in: Mays C, Laborie L, Griset P (eds) (2022) Inventing a shared science diplomacy for Europe: Interdisciplinary case studies to think with history. A team of archaeologists from Berlin under the direction of Prof. Anton Moortgat conducted, starting from 1958, excavations at the important ancient urban site of Tell Chuera in northeast Syria. The heterogeneous composition of the Syrian workforce contributed to frequent quarrels and conflicts. In October 1963, one of these conflicts escalated into a 5-day strike, during which the workers also demanded higher wages. After the involvement of local police by the archaeologists, the strike was ended with the threat of bruta…
Infrastructure and system programming for digital ecosystems used in natural disaster management
2009
Researchers in most fields of activity must concentrate their efforts to eradicate or at least to mitigate the negative effects of “global warming”, which affect the entire planet. Within this context, we strongly believe that IT&C specialists should also approach the issue. Therefore, this paper presents the results and solutions obtained during the development of a research contract dealing on the one hand with real-time data collection and data centralization in a decision making system, and on the other with the dissemination of information among the people exposed to the effects of natural disasters such as: floods, storms, tsunamis, or other natural disasters which may destroy propert…
Description of two new fossil echinoids (Echinodermata: Echinoidea) from the Early Hauterivian (Early Cretaceous) of the Paris Basin (France)
2012
The role of hybridization in the evolution ofCousinias.str.(Asteraceae, Cardueae)
2009
Abstract Mehregan I. & Kadereit J. W.: The role of hybridization in the evolution of Cousinia s.str. (Asteraceae, Cardueae). — Willdenowia 39: 35–47. — Online ISSN 1868-6397; © 2009 BGBM Berlin-Dahlem. doi:10.3372/wi.39.39102 (available via http://dx.doi.org/) In order to assess the possible role of interspecific hybridization for the evolution of the high diversity of Cousinia subg. Cousinia (Cousinia s.str., c. 600 species), we examined the frequency of hybridization in this taxon. For this, hypothetical hybrid combinations published in the literature (28 putative hybrids and 11 intermediate forms) were critically examined. In addition, two hybrids were identified in the present study by …
A taxonomical study of the subtribe leontodontinae based on the distribution of phenolic compounds
1993
Abstract Evaluation of the phenolic constituents of five species belonging to the subtribe Leontodontinae (family Asteraceae) allowed the identification of ten flavonoid and eight phenolic acids by means of HPLC and other standard methods. The role of these compounds in relation to the morphological characteristics in the systematics of the subtribe is discussed.
Phylogeny of Early Cretaceous spatangoids (Echinodermata: Echinoidea) and taxonomic implications
2004
A phylogenetic analysis of 36 species provides a test for the taxonomy and the history of Early Cretaceous spatangoids. Most taxonomic units from genera to suborders are consistent with the proposed phylogenetic framework. We retain Hemiasterina, Micrasterina, Hemiasteridae, Schizasteridae, Hemiaster, Heteraster, Mecaster, and Periaster as original monophyletic groups. However, all of these clades originate without the classical apomorphies normally ascribed to them. We suggest a revision of their diagnoses and of the generic attributions of basal species. Some ill-defined, ‘primitive’, and paraphyletic taxa are recognised: Toxaster, Epiaster, Palhemiaster, and Toxasteridae. Even if they do…

Enabling quantum non-Markovian dynamics by injection of classical colored noise
2017
The non-Markovian nature of quantum systems recently turned to be a key subject for investigations on open quantum system dynamics. Many studies, from its theoretical grounding to its usefulness as a resource for quantum information processing and experimental demonstrations, have been reported in the literature. Typically, in these studies, a structured reservoir is required to make non-Markovian dynamics emerge. Here, we investigate the dynamics of a qubit interacting with a bosonic bath and under the injection of a classical stochastic colored noise. A canonical Lindblad-like master equation for the system is derived by using the stochastic wave function formalism. Then, the non-Markovia…
