Early detection of volcanic hazard by lidar measurement of carbon dioxide
2016
Volcanic gases give information on magmatic processes. In particular, anomalous releases of carbon dioxide precede volcanic eruptions. Up to now, this gas has been measured in volcanic plumes with conventional measurements that imply the severe risks of local sampling and can last many hours. For these reasons and for the great advantages of laser sensing, the thorough development of volcanic lidars has been undertaken at ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development). In fact, lidar profiling allows one to scan remotely volcanic plumes in a fast and continuous way, and with high spatial and temporal resolution. A differential absorption lid…

Cytotoxic activity of several ent-kaurane derivatives of atractyligenin. Synthesis of unreported diterpenic skeleton by chemical rearrangement
2022
Atractyloside, carboxyatractyloside, their aglycon atractyligenin, and several synthetic derivatives were tested and found to be active against a panel of human tumor cell lines. Atractyligenin was subjected to oxidation, bromination, and elimination reactions, obtaining several compounds. A singular skeleton was synthesized by chemical rearrangement starting from 3 beta-bromo-2,15-diketoatractyligenin methyl ester. The synthesized compounds resulted active against all cell lines tested. In particular, 15-ketoatractyligenin methyl ester and 3 beta bromo-2,15-diketoatractyligenin methyl ester resulted the most active with IC50 values of 0.427 and 0.723 mu M against A375 melanoma cell line. E…
Sprint and Strength Training Modulates Autophagy and Proteostasis in Aging Sprinters
2020
Purpose Exercise and aging may modulate muscle protein homeostasis and autophagy, but few studies examine highly-trained middle-aged or older individuals. This study elucidated the effects of a new long-term training stimulus on markers of muscle autophagy and unfolded protein response (UPR) and on sprint running performance in masters sprinters. Methods Thirty-two male competitive sprinters (aged 40–76 years) were randomly divided into experimental (EX) and control (CTRL) groups. The EX training program was a combination of heavy and explosive strength and sprint exercises aimed at improving sprint performance. Fifteen and thirteen participants completed the 20-week intervention period in …
A new annual species of Bellium (Asteraceae) from the Balearic Islands
2007
A new species, Bellium artrutxensis (Asteraceae: Astereae), is described from the therophytic pastures of southern Minorca (Balearic Islands). The analysis of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences showed that the new taxon was closely related to Bellium bellidioides , but differed with regard to the annual lifespan, the absence of epigeal stolons, and the presence of a patent eglandular indumentum on the leaves. The new taxon shows morphological features that are well suited for the colonization of dry environments with a marked summer drought, and may be of adaptive significance. The new species is diploid (2 n = 18) and shows up to two accessory chromosomes in root…
Effect of Bacillus thuringiensis on physiological rates of Mediterranean marine intertidal Mytilaster minimus (Mollusca, Bivalvia)
2010
The aim of the present research is to evaluate the impact of agricultural products in the marine environments. Indeed in a country such as Italy and in particularly Sicily where agricultural areas nearshore marine waters, predicting where, when and with what magnitude the impact of xenobiotics derived from agriculture is imperative. In this contest we use as model a biological product (Bacillus thuringiensis) in understanding its potential effects on non target species and on marine biodiversity. Bivalves are important elements of marine biodiversity and very often they play a role of ecosystem engineers in that many other species structurally depend on their presence. Moreover as they cons…

Cotoneaster Majoricensis L. Sáez & Rosselló (Rosaceae), a New Species from Majorca (Balearic Islands, Spain)
2012
Abstract Saez, L. & J. A. Rossello (2012). Cotoneaster majoricensis L. Saez & Rossello (Rosaceae), a new species from Majorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). Candollea 67: 243–253. In English, English and French abstracts. A new species from the northern mountains of Mallorca (Balearic Islands), Cotoneaster majoricensis L. Saez & Rossello (Rosaceae), is described and illustrated. It belongs to section Cotoneaster Medik. and is morphologically close to Cotoneaster tomentosus (Aiton) Lindl. and Cotoneaster raboutensis K. E. Flink & al., differing however by various morphological characters. Data on taxonomic relationships, ecology, and conservation status of this new apparently narrow-ranged endem…
Chromosome numbers in Hieracium and Pilosella species (Asteraceae) from the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands
2007
Mitotic chromosome numbers are reported from 16 Hieracium and two Pilosella species from the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands that are little known cytogenetically. The chromosome numbers of Hieracium aragonense Scheele (2 n = 27, 36), H. compositum Lapeyr. (2 n = 27), H. murcandidum G. Mateo (2 n = 27), H. spathulatum Scheele (2 n = 27), H. segurae Mateo (2 n = 27), H. teruelanum Mateo (2 n = 27), H. valentinum Pau (2 n = 27), Pilosella pseudovahlii (De Retz) Mateo (2 n = 18), and P. tardans (Peter) Sojak (2 n = 36) were determined for the first time. New cytotypes were detected in H. cordifolium Lapeyr. (2 n = 27) and H. loscosianum Scheele (2 n = 36). The karyo- type of the stu…
The White Stone of South-Eastern Sicily: Urban and Territorial Identity
2017
