Parasitic, commensalistic, and mutualistic guests in social insect colonies often circumvent their hosts’ nestmate recognition system to be accepted. These tolerance strategies include chemical mimicry and chemical insignificance. While tolerance strategies have been studied intensively in social parasites, little is known about these mechanisms in non-parasitic interactions. Here, we describe a strategy used in a parabiotic association, i.e. two mutualistic ant species that regularly share a common nest although they have overlapping food niches. One of them, Crematogaster modiglianii, produces an array of cuticular compounds which represent a substance class undescribed in nature so far. …
Le monastère Saint-Pierre d'Osor (île de Cres) : septième campagne d'études archéologiques
2013
The 2012 campaign of the archaeological research project permitted the exhaustive excavations of the immediate surroundings of the southern nave of the abbey church of St Peter in Osor. The richness and the complexity of the discovered structures confirmed the great archaeological potential of this sector. Namely, a funeral zone that is situated south to the church is occupied by two buildings perpendicular to the church which we interpret as a mausoleum (the one on the west) and a chapel with one privileged burial (the one on the east). The great number of built tombs or simples graves confirmed that this sector had funeral function even before the XIth century and the construction of the …
Esquisse d'un paysage monastique insulaire dans le nord de l'Adriatique : l'archipel du Kvarner (Croatie)
2013
The authors of the article set as their goal the examination of the complex question of early Monasticism (up to the 11th century) in the Kvarner region, reconsidering the old archaeological data, the unpublished ancient results and the results of new archaeological surveys gathered since 2010 through the specific research program. The first difficulty encountered is that of the actual identification of the archaeological remains as a monastic or hermitic site, given the lack of any written source for most of the sites. We examine here a certain number of religious sites, potentially monastic ones, considering their larger context of implantation, their patron, and/or their vicinity to a by…
PTSD symptoms in children and adolescents 28 months after a flood: age and gender differences.
2007
The present study examined the prevalence and predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms (PTSD) in a sample of 533 students (aged 11 to 21), 28 months after the 1997 Flood in southwestern Poland. The results show that 18% of the participants met all diagnostic criteria for PTSD. Based on hierarchical multiple regression analyses, PTSD criteria symptoms were positively correlated with the degree of exposure to trauma experienced during the disaster. A three-way interaction of trauma, age, and gender showed that more PTSD symptoms were observed among the younger participants and girls than among the older boys. The results confirm the need of research testing culturally sensitive im…
Simulation-based Evacuation Planning for Urban Areas
2021
Evacuation planning is a critical task in disaster management. Especially in situations such as natural disasters or terrorist attacks, large crowds need to move away from danger and reach designated safe zones. For this purpose, various approaches that efficiently compute evacuation plans in urban areas have been proposed. To evaluate the computed plans, previous works employ heuristics that can only roughly estimate the egress time of each plan. Intuitively, a much better approach is to estimate the egress time via simulation. However, designing a simulation model is usually a time-consuming task and, what is more, this model can only be used to evaluate evacuation plans for a specific ar…
Kinetic control in the chiral recognition of three-bladed propellers
2010
The ion pair of the stereolabile C(3)-symmetric, i(+)o proton complex [1H](+) of diaza-macropentacycle 1 and the configurationally stable Delta-TRISPHAT ([Delta-3](-)) anion exists in the form of two diastereomers, namely, [Delta-(1.H)][Delta-3] and [Lambda-(1.H)][Delta-3], the ratio of which, in terms of diastereomeric excess (de) decreases in the order [D(8)]THF (28%)CD(2)Cl(2) (22%)CDCl(3) (20%)[D(8)]toluene (16%)C(6)D(6) (7%)[D(6)]acetone (0%) at thermodynamic equilibrium. Except in the case of [D(6)]acetone, the latter is reached after a period of time that increases from 1 h ([D(8)]THF) to 24 h (CDCl(3)). Moreover, the initial value of the de of [1.H][Delta-3] in CDCl(3), before the t…
ChemInform Abstract: Synthesis and X-Ray Structure of Metalated Rhodium(II) Catalysts with a Chiral Phospholane.
2001
The reaction of Rh2(O2CR)4 (R = CH3, CF3) with the chiral phosphane (2S,5S)-2,5-dimethyl-1-phenylphospholane (PC*H), results in the formation of two diastereoisomers of Rh2(O2CCR)2(PC*)2, with (P) and (M) configuration. These can easily be isolated by chromatographic methods to obtain enantiomerically pure RhII compounds. Preliminary catalytic studies have shown that they induce moderate asymmetry in the cyclization of 5-aryl-1-diazo-2-pentanones and 1-diazo-5-hexen-2-one. X-ray analysis of the (M) diastereoisomer with formula Rh2(O2CCCH3)2(PC*)2 is reported. The crystallographic parameters are as follows: space group P21212 (orthorhombic) with a = 12.1347(11) A, b = 14.5870(13) A, c = 9.81…
Verso le città del mondo
2010
The “Città del mondo” significantly characterized the first series of «In Architecture», best representing the pioneering spirit of the journal and the architectural and cultural research of its authors. The comparison between local realities, generally small towns of the Sicilian hinterland and cities of different sizes and latitudes, already explicitly in the intentions of the method the reference to the universality of experience, making the intertwining of horizons that it allows civil progress and the growth of creative abilities.
Diaspora and ambidextrous management of tourism in post-colonial, post-conflict and post-disaster destinations
2019
This exploratory study aims at identifying diaspora tourism practices and at exploring its benefit in Haiti, a Carribbean island. In so doing, this research work fills both theoretical and practica...
