Symbolic dynamics in a binary asteroid system

2020

We highlight the existence of a topological horseshoe arising from a a--priori stable model of the binary asteroid dynamics. The inspection is numerical and uses correctly aligned windows, as described in a recent paper by A. Gierzkiewicz and P. Zgliczy\'nski, combined with a recent analysis of an associated secular problem.

Deep uncertainty in humanitarian logistics operations: decision-making challenges in responding to large-scale natural disasters

2019

Humanitarian logistics operations perform challenging tasks while responding to large-scale natural disasters. Decision makers at different stages of humanitarian operations exploit numerous problem-specific decision-making models or tools. When synchronising the outputs (decisions) from models into a unified solution, the situation becomes critical because of the lack of consensus on objectives and the availability of model alternatives with uncertainty in the models' key parameters and evaluation of the models' alternative outcomes. Thus, the operational environment becomes complex to respond urgently to humanitarian needs and makes the situation deeply uncertain. In this paper, we inspec…

Resolution of β-aminophosphines with chiral cyclopalladated complexes

2005

Abstract Resolution of the racemic chiral β-aminophosphines Ph 2 PCH 2 CH(Ph)NH(Ar) ( L 1 for Ar = C 6 H 5 and L 2 for Ar = 2,6-C 6 H 3 i Pr 2 ) has been investigated by use of different cyclopalladated complexes as chiral agents. The resulting complexes afford diastereomeric adducts in a 1:1 ratio. After successive crystallizations from ethanol, a d.e. of 98% was achieved for one aminophosphine palladium complex, while no significant d.e. was obtained after crystallizations from chlorinated solvents. The X-ray structure analysis has pointed out intermolecular hydrogen interactions N–H⋯Cl between the P,N ligand and the chloride ion, which are responsible for the formation and stabilization …

Estimation of the water table depth of the Calarasi district Island (Romania) at the Danube River using ASTER/DEM data

2014

The water table is the top level of ground water by definition. Therefore surface water is an exposed part of the water table. Airborne measurements, resistivimeters determinations or perforation analyses can be used to determine the water table depth. These methods require, approximately, taking a sample per hectare, which is a very expensive and time-consuming procedure. However, remote sensing constitutes an ideal alternative to determine water table depth, because unlike the existing methodologies, which are very expensive due to equipment and travel expenses, the proposed methodology is cheap and simple. The ASTER GDEM data is available at no charge to users via electronic download and…

Prospective use of collected fog water in the restoration of degraded burned areas under dry Mediterranean conditions

2009

Abstract A mountainous plot located in the interior of the Valencia region (east coast of the Iberian Peninsula) was identified for reforestation using the fog-water collection potential prevailing in the area. Fog data were obtained by means of an instrument ensemble consisting of a passive cylindrical fog-water collector, a rain gauge, a wind direction and velocity sensor and a temperature and humidity probe. Preliminary results gave rise to the additional deployment of a low-cost 18-m 2 flat-panel collector connected to three 1000-l tanks for larger scale fog-water collection and storage. The 2007 annual rate of fog water that could be derived from the instrument ensemble amounted to 3.3…

Influence of volcanic activity on the quality of water collected in roof water catchment systems at Stromboli Island (Italy)

2013

Abstract With the aim of detailing the interaction between volcanic emissions and water harvesting by Roof Water Catchment Systems (RWCSs), the present work illustrates the results of a study carried out at Stromboli Island, a small but densely populated active volcanic area in the South of Italy. Concentrations of major and trace elements determined in RWCS waters and sediments revealed clear clues of a contamination with gases and suspended particles of volcanic origin, even if the values of those contaminants considered by the World Health Organization as dangerous for human health are always below the Maximum Admitted Concentration (MAC). In particular, cistern water showed a compositio…

A copula-based approach for assessing flood protection overtopping associated with a seasonal flood forecast in Niamey, West Africa

2016

Flood is one of the most important natural disasters that cause huge loss of life and properties every year around the world. Moreover, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies pointed out that floods were by far the greatest cause of homelessness. In West Africa, many countries are damaged from flooding almost every season. Thus, this study aimed to set a seasonal flood forecast model and carried out an evaluation of the level of risk associated with each seasonal forecast. HEC-RAS (Hydrologic Engineering Centers River Analysis System) was used to develop a hydro-dynamical model of Niger river on a 160km reach (80km upstream to 80kmdownstream of Niamey), the…

(2662) Proposal to reject the name Hypochaeris urens (Asteraceae)

2018

In order to avoid a disadvantageous nomenclatural change (Art. 56.1 of the ICN) entailed by the strict application of the rules, and to promote nomenclatural stability in the most parsimonious way, we here propose the rejection, under Art. 56, of the name Hypochaeris urens.

Back to School : Labor-Market Returns to Higher Vocational Schooling

2019

This paper examines the labor-market returns to a new form of postsecondary vocational education: vocational master's degrees. We use individual fixed effects models on a matched sample of students and non-students from Finland to capture any time-invariant differences across individuals. We find that attendance in vocational master's programs leads to an earnings increase of more than seven percent five years after entry. The estimated effect remains positive even if selection on unobservables is twice as strong as selection on observables. Earnings gains are similar by gender and age, but they are marginally higher for those in the health sector than for those in the business or technolog…
