Centaurea heywoodiana (Asteraceae), a new species from the Nebrodi Mountains (NE-Sicily)

A new endemic species of Centaurea is here described from the Nebrodi Mountains, in Sicily, and named Centaurea heywoodiana. Information on its morphology, distribution, ecology and taxonomic relationship is also provided.

Discovery of a second locality for the narrow endemic Anthemis ismelia (Asteraceae) in NW Sicily

A new population of Anthemis ismelia (Asteraceae) has been discovered on Mt Pecoraro (Cinisi, NW Sicily), a limestone headland at about 14 km from Mt Gallo (Palermo), the locus classicus et unicus of this species described in 1884. Taxonomic framework, distribution update, habitat characterisation, ecology and phytosociological framework are provided, as well as meta-population numerical estimates and risk status assessment.

Assessment of genetic variation in SicilianHelichrysum(Asteraceae) and implication to germplasm conservation

Some taxa of Sicilian Helichrysum related to sect. Stoeachadina have an uncertain systematic position; moreover, they are rare and endangered. In order to preserve these taxa in a genebank, a strategy to keep their genetic variation as high as possible is required. The high informative content of AFLP markers was used to assess genetic variations within and between populations and their relationships. Syntheses of (+)-alismoxide and (+)-4-epi-alismoxide.

The first total syntheses of (+)-alismoxide and (+)-4-epi-alismoxide are reported. Formal chemo-, regio-, and stereoselective addition of water to 10alpha-acetoxy-1alphaH,5betaH-guaia-3,6-diene afforded the target compounds after reduction. The absolute stereochemistry of (+)-alismoxide has been established. The low [alpha](D) +8.6 value indicates that significant amounts of alismoxide result from biosynthetic processes. Furthermore, the structure of the natural guaienediol isolated from Silphium perfoliatum has been corrected to (-)-alismoxide.

Constituents of leaves and flowers essential oils of Helichrysum pallasii (Spreng.) Ledeb. growing wild in Lebanon.

The chemical compositions of the essential oils obtained from leaves and flowers of Helichrysum pallasii were analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Among the 102 identified constituents, hexadecanoic acid (16.2%), (Z,Z)-9,12-octadecadienoic acid (6.8%), tetradecanoic acid (2.6%), and (Z)-caryophyllene (4.2%) were the main constituent of the oil from leaves, while in the oil from flowers hexadecanoic acid (14.7%), (Z,Z)-9,12-octadecadienoic acid (14.2%), (Z)-caryophyllene (3.6%), and delta-cadinene (3.1%) predominated. The present study was designed to optimize the experimental conditions that govern the heme-catalyzed nitration of protein tyrosine residues by nitrite, and, within this framework, to study the effects of 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid and its methyl ester, both of which have been previously reported to be antioxidants and inhibitors of leukocyte functions. Although the presence of hydrogen peroxide is essential in cell-free systems, an excess of this compound was found to be detrimental, so much so that an increase in hemin concentration actually resulted in an inverse effect on the reaction, depending on the levels of fixed hydrogen peroxide. Hieracium madoniense(Asteraceae) – a new species from Sicily

Abstract A new endemic species of Hieracium is described from the Madonie Mountains (northern Sicily). Named Hieracium madoniense, this new taxon is confined to the Rocca di Mele, along the borders of Fagus sylvatica woods, on carbonate substrate. Relationships with the closest taxa are discussed.

Hieracium pallidum subsp. aetnense (Asteraceae), a new subspecies from Sicily (Italy), with notes on the taxonomy of H. pallidum Biv.

Hieracium pallidum subsp. aetnense Gottschl., Raimondo & Di Grist. is described and illustrated. H.pallidum is considered as an intermediate species between H. schmidtii and H. racemosum (“schmidtii>racemosum”) and is placed in H. sect. Grovesiana. By consequence, H.lanudae Gottschl. is transferred to H. pallidum as H. pallidum subsp. lanudae (Gottschl.) Gottschl., Raimondo & Di Grist. A key for the three recognised subspecies of H. pallidum is provided.
