Testing for Asymmetric Information in Insurance Markets: A Multivariate Ordered Regression Approach

2018

The positive correlation (PC) test is the standard procedure used in the empirical literature to detect the existence of asymmetric information in insurance markets. This article describes a new tool to implement an extension of the PC test based on a new family of regression models, the multivariate ordered logit, designed to study how the joint distribution of two or more ordered response variables depends on exogenous covariates. We present an application of our proposed extension of the PC test to the Medigap health insurance market in the United States. Results reveal that the risk–coverage association is not homogeneous across coverage and risk categories, and depends on individual so…

Endogenous asymmetry and cooperative R&D in linear duopoly with spillovers

2009

In a standard model of R&D followed by linear Cournot competition, firm asymmetry is sustainable as equilibrium with non cooperative R&D if and only if the productivity of research is sufficiently large relative to the benefits of imitation. Increasing spillovers distribute R&D results among asymmetric competitors, causing price, firm asymmetry, and joint profit to reduce. With zero spillovers, a symmetric joint lab dominates asymmetric R&D competition in terms of social welfare and consumer surplus, but is sometimes dominated in terms of joint profit. Raising spillovers encourage symmetric collusion but makes the latter potentially harmful to consumers. (JEL : C72; L13; O32).

Labor Productivity and Okun’s law: An empirical application to Italian regional panel data

2012

Okun’s law, named for its proposer, Arthur Okun, was first applied during the 1960s in the USA to describe the relationship between economic growth and unemployment fluctuations. Several attempts were later made to test the empirical applicability of the relationship to different countries and historical periods. Heterogeneous results were generally found in estimating Okun’s coefficient, depending on the sample and context analysed. The main goal of this paper is to analyze the relevance of Okun’s law to Italian regions. We perform a panel analysis to estimate the influence of asymmetry and local market differences on Okun’s relationship. Moreover, observing particularly low values of part…

Ice deformed in compression and simple shear: control of temperature and initial fabric

2012

AbstractLayered and polycrystalline ice was experimentally deformed in general shear involving axial compression (strain magnitude 0.5-17%) and simple shear (strain magnitude γ = 0.1-1.4). As the temperature is increased from -20°C to -2°C, there is at least a twofold enhancement in octahedral shear strain rate, which coincides with the onset of extensive dynamic recrystallization and a change in grain-size distribution at -15°C. Between -150C and -10°C the c-axis preferred orientation rapidly evolves with the initiation of two-maxima fabrics in shear zones. From -10°C to -2°C there is progressive evolution of a final c-axis pattern that is asymmetric with respect to the direction of shorte…

Benthic hydroids from the south of Livingston Island (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) collected by the Spanish Antarctic expedition Bentart 94

2006

Twenty-five species of benthic hydroids were collected during the Spanish Antarctic expedition Bentart 94 from the south of Livingston Island (Antarctica). All species are considered regarding autecology and geographical distribution. The systematic position amongst allied species is discussed when considered necessary. Antarctoscyphus asymmetricus and Symplectoscyphus nesioticus are reported for the second and the third time, respectively.

Modeling the remnants of core-collapse supernovae from luminous blue variable stars

2021

LBVs are massive evolved stars that suffer sporadic and violent mass-loss events. They have been proposed as the progenitors of some core-collapse SNe, but this idea is still debated due to the lack of direct evidence. Since SNRs can carry in their morphology the fingerprints of the progenitor stars as well as of the inhomogeneous CSM sculpted by the progenitors, the study of SNRs from LBVs could help to place core-collapse SNe in context with the evolution of massive stars. We investigate the physical, chemical and morphological properties of the remnants of SNe originating from LBVs, in order to search for signatures, revealing the nature of the progenitors, in the ejecta distribution and…

Active unilateral condylar hyperplasia : assessment of the usefulness of single photon emission computed tomography

2020

[Background] This study aims to evaluate whether the uptake difference by the condyles evaluated using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) examination is useful for predicting the activity of the feature and the advance of this pathology.
