Accurate Determination of the Neutron Skin Thickness of Pb208 through Parity-Violation in Electron Scattering

We report a precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A_{PV} in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from ^{208}Pb. We measure A_{PV}=550±16(stat)±8(syst) parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor F_{W}(Q^{2}=0.00616 GeV^{2})=0.368±0.013. Combined with our previous measurement, the extracted neutron skin thickness is R_{n}-R_{p}=0.283±0.071 fm. The result also yields the first significant direct measurement of the interior weak density of ^{208}Pb: ρ_{W}^{0}=-0.0796±0.0036(exp)±0.0013(theo) fm^{-3} leading to the interior baryon density ρ_{b}^{0}=0.1480±0.0036(exp)±0.0013(theo) fm^{-3}. Two-photon exchange in muon-nuclear scattering

We obtain a low-momentum-transfer theorem for positive- and negative-muon--nuclear scattering, in terms of the charge and the electric and magnetic polarizabilities. The result opens the way to use muons as a tool to probe the electromagnetic structure of composite objects. Predictions of this two-photon effect for the asymmetry in the angular distribution of negative and positive muons scattered by /sup 4/He are given.

AbstractExperimental Stark broadening studies of the infrared CI transition 3s 1 P 1o − 3p 1 S 0 at 833.5 nm are reported for the first time. A high-current wall-stabilized arc, operated in a mixture of helium, argon, carbon dioxide and hydrogen, was applied as the plasma source. Radiation emitted from homogeneous and optically thin plasma layers was analyzed. Stark broadening studies of the selected CI transition and the hydrogen Balmer β line were performed. As expected from theoretical considerations, the CI line width depends linearly on the electron density of the plasma. This paper investigates the detectability of rotor broken bars in indirect rotor flux oriented control (IRFOC) for variable speed double cage induction motor drives, using vibration signature analysis techniques. 2p-shell admixtures in pion single charge exchange on 13C

Abstract The pion charge exchange process 13 C (π + , π 0 ) 13 N(gs) is calculated with an extended nuclear wave function for the A=13 system that includes configurations outside the 1p-shell. A small amount of 2p-shell admixtures leads to an improved description of the experimental excitation function. We also find a strong sensitivity of the differential cross sections as well as asymmetry to contributions from higher shells.

If managers are risk-averse and compensation schemes are not directly linked to shareholder wealth, incentives to allocate effort to manage effects of relative and macroeconomic shocks may be distorted. In this paper we develop a simple model to identify factors that determine the optimal allocation of effort to manage relative and macroeconomic shocks. We then show how serial correlation in shocks, the relative variance of shocks and the ability of managers to influence the effects of shocks on shareholder wealth determine the optimal allocation of managerial effort. Modelling of asymmetric nanojets in coronal loops

Context. Observations of reconnection jets in the solar corona are emerging as a possible diagnostic for studying highly elusive coronal heating. Such jets, and in particular those termed nanojets, can be observed in coronal loops and have been linked to nanoflares. However, while models successfully describe the bilateral post-reconnection magnetic slingshot effect that leads to the jets, observations reveal that nanojets are unidirectional or highly asymmetric, with only the jet travelling inward with respect to the coronal loop’s curvature being clearly observed. Nonlinear response theory for Markov processes: simple models for glassy relaxation.

The theory of nonlinear response for Markov processes obeying a master equation is formulated in terms of time-dependent perturbation theory for the Green's functions and general expressions for the response functions up to third order in the external field are given. The nonlinear response is calculated for a model of dipole reorientations in an asymmetric double well potential, a standard model in the field of dielectric spectroscopy. The static nonlinear response is finite with the exception of a certain temperature $T_0$ determined by the value of the asymmetry.
