2021

The main goal of this article is to provide evidence in favor of the phonological character of some intonational contrasts in Catalan. First, the article shows that tonal alignment differences with respect to metrically strong positions are crucial for the distinction between a yes-no question and a wh-question (cf. "¿Que l’ha llogada?" vs. "¿Qui l’ha llogada?") and between a command and a request ("¡Vine!" vs. "¡Vine!") in Central Catalan. Second, the article reports the major results from the application of the Categorical Perception Paradigm to a pitch height contrast in Majorcan Catalan (Vanrell 2006a). Experimental resuls show that a small variation in the pitch height of the pretonic …

2008

In Catalonia, in a short period of time, statistics have raised from the 1% recorded ten years ago to the current 13% of students of foreign’s origin. This change has increased linguistic diversity regarding student’s background. However, more than a 50% are from Hispanic origin and the majority have Spanish as their mother tongue. In this case, and strictly from a linguistic point of view, the linguistic immersion programs used in Catalonia to teach Catalan to Spanish students maintain their validity. The article compares Catalan learning in two Spanish-speaking populations of 253 and 157 pupils of autochthonous and foreign origin at the end of childhood education. Results indicate that di…

La missió en la vida. Notes sobre «Camins de França» de Joan Puig i Ferreter

2005

This article approaches the task of analyzing the autobiographical activity of Joan Puig i Ferrater. Particular attention is paid to «Camins de França», one of the most outstanding autobiographies of the twentieth century literature. The literary production of Puig i Ferreter turns around a series of basic characteristics: life like an initiation journey, life like a search of the affirmation of his own personality, and the sense of sensuality. All in all, the author conceives his office of artist as an adventure in search of his own essence.

2021

This article first surveys the use of the first person in medieval writing, showing its literary worth, and establishing the validity of this approach to Catalan literature. Secondly, it is suggested that Catalan fourteenth century noves rimades are a genre in which a substantial amount of creativity and empirical circumstance were virtually unavoidable, at least when written in a courtly environment. Both these general points of view provide the framework for a close analysis of Pere March's noves. Special attention is given to his merging of a wide range of literary traditions that interact with his different personae, either to build up courtly divertimenti (Lo compte final, Lo mal d'am…

2007

In this paper we would like to compare the evolution of the syntax of polar contexts in Catalan and Spanish. By doing so, it would be possible to explain the greater syntactic disponibility of Catalan quantifiers and the important constraints for the same class of words in Spanish. After presenting in the first section the main theoretical questions about polarity in natural languages, we will describe in the second section the syntax of corresponding contexts in Middle Ages for both languages. Then, in the third section we will attend to the evolution towards current situation in order to understand the nature of modern differences between Catalan and Spanish on this area of their syntax.

1999

One of the Aragonese areas where there is better evidence of Catalan-Aragonese dialect transition is la Llitera, an area in the province of Osca where Catalan and Aragonese border varieties remain alive, alongside the North-Western varieties proper. In order to show the internal geovariation in the area, this paper presents the most relevant phonetic and morphological traits which may establish the linguistic adscription of the local dialects. This is supported by a number of maps, which allow us to understand the geolinguistic configuration. An appendix includes five ethnotexts representing some of the towns, with a comment on the dialectal words appearing therein.

El repoblament aragonés: colonització i llengües (segles XII-XIII)

2002

On the basis of a discussion of the structural expansion of the Aragonese Crown’s feudal system over Sharq al-Andalus during the 12th and 13th centuries, which was similar to that occurred in other European countries at the time, this paper offers an assessment of the contribution of Aragonese immigrants to the repopulation of the País Valencià during the 13th century. After explaining the different quantitative weight of Aragonese colonists in the various Valencian areas, with very little presence in the north of Castelló, a review is made of Aragonese society in the 12th century, focusing on those traits having an influence on the linguistic levelling process with their contemporary Catal…
