Concessive connectors are the focal point of grammaticalization processes, based on several types of lexical sources. In Catalan, «jatsia» (that) is the result of a grammaticalization process based on an aspectual temporary adverb (or phase adverb), which is comparable to the process that produced «encara que». The case of «encara que» has already been studied specifically by Pérez Saldanya & Salvador (1995), while Klesper (1930), Badia (1982) and Cuenca & Massip (2005) have focused on «jatsia» (that). In the standard generative model, phonological rules are strictly ordered, potentially giving rise to complicated derivations with a large number of intermediate representations. In such a model, the order in which the rules apply is as important as the correct formulation of the rules. There are obvious conceptual problems with this theoretical framework, and in recent years several proposals which do away with rule ordering have been put forward. The study of the syntactic variation of the dialects of a language is a good instrument to understand the general properties of language and the syntactic principles that govern the limits of variation in sentence structure. This paper deals with two topics of Catalan sintax, which are given different solutions by the speakers depending on the dialects. One of them is at the interface between syntax and morphology; the other, at the interface between syntax and semantics. [ENG] This article offers an overview of research in sign language acquisition by children, mostly in American Sign Language. The results indicate that the developmental milestones and the linguistic errors made by children acquiring a sign language coincide with those observed in hearing children acquiring spoken languages. The visual-gestural modality is shown not to have the expected impact on the acquisition processes, which is arguably regulated by strictly linguistic principles.

What is the aim today of talking about philology, either in absolute terms or related to other concepts such as linguistics or language sciences? On the one hand, it seems unfair to resort to metaphors that pair (traditional) philology and (textual) necrophilia. On the other hand, turning our back on the reality is not the appropriate response to current problems: a more applied training (in the professional field) is needed, and (in the scientific context) the frontiers should be pushed back, because the old ones are obsolete and in need of reappraisal. In this study we analyze the English translations of Ausiàs March already carried out (Terry, Conejero-Ribes-Keown, Wittlin and Archer), and we pay attention to the criteria and the solutions used. Here the emphasis is on those questions related to the lexicosemantic choice that determines the general strategy of the new translation into prose that the author of this study has carried out for IVITRA. The article is also concerned about the interaction between translation and the improvement of the knowledge of the original itself, as a consequence of translating it and having to understand it completely, even up to the point of proposing some amendments to the criticophylologic fixation.

This is is a paper about the history of Catalan proverbs borrowed by Spanish tradition and lost in modern Catalan. The authors give the real origin of such proverbs and stress the sociolinguistic relevance of this «oblivion», as a kind of inferiority complex, to the present-day consciousness of the Catalan speech community.
