Formation and significance of black pebbles from the ota limestone (Upper Jurassic, Portugal)

1987

Black pebbles are a characteristic facies element of the Upper Jurassic Ota carbonate bank (Portugal). They occur both scattered or concentrated in two horizons, the upper of which is very widespread and may serve as a lithostratigraphic correlation level.

Long-term decrease in Asian monsoon rainfall and abrupt climate change events over the past 6,700 years

2021

Significance The variability of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) is important for the functioning of ecological and societal systems at regional to continental scales, but the long-term evolution and interannual variability of this system is not well understood. Here, we present a stable isotope–based reconstruction of ASM variability covering 4680 BCE to 2011 CE. Superimposed on a gradual drying trend, a rapid drop in mean annual precipitation (>40%) toward persistently drier conditions occurred in ∼1675 BCE. This megadrought caused regional forest deterioration and enhanced aeolian activity affecting Chinese ecosystems. We argue that this abrupt aridification starting ∼2000 BCE triggered wa…

Critical Assessment of European Agenda for the Collaborative Economy, on behalf of European Parliament. In-Depth Analysis for the IMCO Committee

2017

The research paper describes the main legal challenges for regulating the collaborative economy and evaluates the definition of, and elucidates how the existing body of EU law applies to collaborative economy business models. In the last part, the paper elaborates on how a regulatory framework for non- professional provision of services and prosumers should look like and makes a few concrete proposals for future policies. This paper was commissioned by the Policy Department A for Economic, Scientific and Quality of Life Policies upon request of the European Parliament ́s Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection.

Rinse, Repeat. Paratextual Poetics of Literary Twitter Collage Retweeted

2019

This essay studies what happens to the poetics of a text that was first written on or for a certain internet platform when it is later copy-pasted to a different literary medium – that of an edited and printed book. The main target of the discussion is Finnish author Karri Kokko’s conceptual literary work Retweeted (2016), a print-on-demand book, the roots of which are firmly in both the traditions of print media and the digital interfaces of the social media platform Twitter. The analysis pays close attention to the medial qualities of both Twitter and the conceptual novel that draws material from it. The essay aims to highlight the poetic qualities of the material produced and circulated …

Deregulated Splicing Is a Major Mechanism of RNA-Induced Toxicity in Huntington's Disease.

2019

Huntington's disease (HD) is caused by an expanded CAG repeat in the huntingtin (HTT) gene, translating into an elongated polyglutamine stretch. In addition to the neurotoxic mutant HTT protein, the mutant CAG repeat RNA can exert toxic functions by trapping RNA-binding proteins. While few examples of proteins that aberrantly bind to mutant HTT RNA and execute abnormal function in conjunction with the CAG repeat RNA have been described, an unbiased approach to identify the interactome of mutant HTT RNA is missing. Here, we describe the analysis of proteins that preferentially bind mutant HTT RNA using a mass spectrometry approach. We show that (I) the majority of proteins captured by mutant…

Platforma czasopism Uniwersytetu Opolskiego przykładem synergii w budowaniu otwartego dostępu do publikacji uczelnianych

2020

2022

Adversarial Attack’s Impact on Machine Learning Model in Cyber-Physical Systems

2020

Deficiency of correctly implemented and robust defence leaves Internet of Things devices vulnerable to cyber threats, such as adversarial attacks. A perpetrator can utilize adversarial examples when attacking Machine Learning models used in a cloud data platform service. Adversarial examples are malicious inputs to ML-models that provide erroneous model outputs while appearing to be unmodified. This kind of attack can fool the classifier and can prevent ML-models from generalizing well and from learning high-level representation; instead, the ML-model learns superficial dataset regularity. This study focuses on investigating, detecting, and preventing adversarial attacks towards a cloud dat…

Pilsoņu likumdošanas digitālās platformas ManaBalss.lv izvērtējums

2018
