Atrazine uptake, elimination, and bioconcentration by periphyton communities and Daphnia magna: effects of dissolved organic carbon.

2001

The bioconcentration and toxicokinetics of atrazine in three different periphyton communities and in laboratory reared Daphnia magna were studied in natural and artificial waters with different dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and qualities. The exposure concentrations were similar to those short-lived peak concentrations found in contaminated waters. Atrazine uptake and elimination were very fast, and the bioconcentration was low both in periphyton and D. magna. The bioconcentration factors in D. magna were approx. 16% of those in periphyton. The uptake and elimination rates were also higher in periphyton than in Daphnia. The periphyton properties affected the bioconcentration…

THE ROLE OF THROMBIN IN CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM ACTIVITY AND STROKE

2018

Background. Thrombin is a key factor of hemostasis, mediating the conversion of fibrinogen into fibrin. Along with prothrombin, of which thrombin is the active derivative, it has been found locally expressed in the central nervous system. This article aims to describe the role of thrombin in the normal functioning of the central nervous system and stroke.Methods. In this mini-review, the specialized databases Medscape, PubMed, and Web of Science, from the years 2003-2018, were used to find relevant documents by using MeSH terms: ”thrombin” and ”stroke”.Results. Prothrombin and thrombin influence neural development, protection and regeneration, thrombin being a relatively strong regulating f…

Paratransgenic manipulation of tsetsemiR275alters the physiological homeostasis of the fly’s midgut environment

2021

AbstractTsetse flies are vectors of parasitic African trypanosomes (Trypanosomaspp.). Current disease control methods include fly-repelling pesticides, trapping flies, and chemotherapeutic treatment of infected people. Inhibiting tsetse’s ability to transmit trypanosomes by strengthening the fly’s natural barriers can serve as an alternative approach to reduce disease. The peritrophic matrix (PM) is a chitinous and proteinaceous barrier that lines tsetse’s midgut. It protects the epithelial cells from the gut lumen content such as food and invading trypanosomes, which have to overcome this physical barrier to establish an infection. Bloodstream form trypanosomes shed variant surface glycopr…

Oral Dabigatran Etexilate Versus Enoxaparin for Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism After Total Hip or Knee Arthroplasty: A Pooled Analysis of Four …

2011

Abstract Abstract 2312 Introduction: Thromboprophylaxis after major orthopaedic surgery reduces the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Four randomized, double-blind, non-inferiority trials compared oral dabigatran etexilate doses of 220 mg or 150 mg once daily (qd) with subcutaneous enoxaparin for the primary prevention of VTE in patients undergoing elective total hip or knee arthroplasty. In the hip arthroplasty trials (RE-NOVATE® and RE-NOVATE® II) the treatment duration was 28–35 days; in the knee arthroplasty trials it was 6–10 days (RE-MODEL™) and 12–15 days (RE-MOBILIZE®). Three of the trials used a comparator enoxaparin regimen of 40 mg qd started the evening before surgery, while…

Synthesis, characterization and catalytic behavior of AlTf/UVM-7 as new green catalysts for the glycols etherification reactions

2010

Abstract Bimodal porous Al–UVM-7 system materials with different Si-to-Al ratios were prepared using the Atrane route. These were converted in strong acid heterogeneous AlTf-based catalysts after the treatment with methanolic solutions of triflic acid. The materials so obtained were used as catalysts for the conversion of ethylene glycol (EG) and propylene glycol (PG) with octanol under solvent-free conditions. The process is selective to short ethoxylated structures resulting in the corresponding monoethers. While the conversion of EG and PG was very high (>94%) irrespective of the support characteristics, 1-octanol was transformed only in low degree (3–35%), and its conversion depends on …

Direct potentiometric immunoelectrodes

1993

TK pencil fine mines type Faber Castell Super polymer from Staedtler are used as graphite based material for an atrazine-sensitive immunoelectrode. Eighteen procedures are tested to immobilize antibodies against atrazine but only one turned out to be useful for the preparation of a graphite based immunoelectrode. It incorporates binding of glutardialdehyde to active sites of the graphite surface and subsequent cross-linking of the antibodies with glutardialdehyde. The method has been carefully optimized with respect to selectivity and the cross-sensitivity is determined for such an electrode based on atrazine-rabbit and atrazine-sheep antibodies as well. Due to the structural difference of …

The structure and stereochemistry of atractyligenin

1966

Abstract The structure of atractyligenin C19H28O4, the nor-diterpenoidic aglycone of atractyloside C30H44O16S2K2 has been substantiated as Ia. The absolute configuration shown in Ia proves it to be a derivative of (−)kaurene.

New multicomponent catalysts for the selective aerobic oxidative condensation of benzylamine to N-benzylidenebenzylamine

2014

Aerobic oxidative condensation of benzylamine to N-benzylidenebenzylamine was carried out on new gold-based catalysts using as support bimodal UVM-7-like mesoporous silica containing Ni and Ce (or Sn) as oxide nanodomains partially embedded inside the mesoporous UVM-7 silica walls. These nanodomains acted as effective and stable inorganic anchors favoring the nucleation, growth and stability of supported gold particles. Following the atrane method (a “one-pot” strategy able to harmonize the hydrolytic reactivity of different heteroelements through the use of complexes containing triethanolamine-derived ligands (atranes) as precursors) the stability of the oxide nanodomains during oxidation …
