The most positive aspect of science is that the participants (researchers, reviewers and editors) control and evaluate their work themselves. Therefore they must be supported in one way or another. Fortunately, guidelines have been developed for different methodologies. However, today the guidelines are not very applicable. The first two sets of guidelines published (both positivist studies) had unusual problems. In this work, we analyze and improve the guidelines generally. Wood formation in pedunculate oak and its relation with climatic factors in Latvia

Šajā darbā ir analizēta parastā ozola (Quercus robur L.) augšanas saistība ar klimatiskajiem faktoriem Latvijā (43 vietas), izmantojot dendrohronoloăijas un dendroekoloģijas metodes. Klimata ietekmes novērtējumam, izmantoja divus atšķirīgus gadskārtu mērījumus: gadskārtu platumu un pavasara koksnes traheju dobumu laukumu. Ozola augšana uzrādīja atšķirības gar austrumu-rietumu gradientu saistībā ar klimata kontinentalitāti. Balstoties uz šo gradientu Latvijas teritoriju var iedalīt divās daļās (rietumu un austrumu reģionā). Conservation status of the Italian flora under the 92/43/EEC ‘Habitats’ Directive

The results of the 4th National Report for the Italian flora under the 92/43/EEC ‘Habitats’ Directive are presented. The outcomes showed a general negative conservation status for plant species, with the worst situation being in the Mediterranean bioregion. At the National level, significant monitoring and conservation activities are required.
Vecvecāku iesaistīšanās mazbērnu audzināšanā saistība ar emocionālo klimatu trīs paaudžu ģimenēs

Pētījuma mērķis bija noskaidrot, vai pastāv saistība starp vecvecāku iesaistes līmeni un emocionālo klimatu trīs paaudžu ģimenēs. Pētījumā piedalījās skolēni (n=56), kuri mācās vispārizglītojošo skolu no 10. līdz12. klasei un mitinās trīs paaudžu ģimenēs. Respondenti bija vecumā no 15 līdz 19 gadiem (M=17,49), no kuriem 70% ir meitenes un 30% zēni. Pētījumā izmantotajā anketā tika ievākti demogrāfiskie dati un informācija par ģimenes sastāvu, lai noskaidrotu, vai respondents mitinās trīs paaudžu ģimenē. Exercise and inflammation with special reference to resistance training

The aim of the present dissertation was to examine the acute and chronic effects of resistance exercise on inflammation markers in young men. In addition, the effect of combined resistance and endurance training on inflammation was assessed. The present dissertation consisted of four studies. Acute inflammation response was evaluated using cross-sectional design after hypertrophic and maximal (n=12) resistance exercise bouts (I). In addition, acute inflammation was examined before and after resistance training (RT) consisting either hypertrophic or maximal explosive (n=8) resistance exercise bouts (RE) (II). Benthic mats offer a potential subsidy to pelagic consumers in tundra pond food webs

We quantified the potential nutritional contribution of benthic mats to pelagic consumers in tundra ponds using three approaches. (1) We compared benthic and pelagic habitats based on their algal biomass and community composition and assessed the dietary quality in terms of fatty acid (FA) concentrations in both habitats. The algal community compositions differed significantly between habitats. Both benthic and pelagic habitats contained saturated and unsaturated FAs, but on average there were more FAs relative to carbon in the pelagic habitat (44 6 29 mg mg C21) than the benthic habitat (23 6 18 mg mg C21) across all studied ponds.
