The Australian Sheep-Goat Scale: An Evaluation of Factor Structure and Convergent Validity.

2018

The Australian Sheep-Goat Scale (ASGS) is a commonly used measure of belief in the paranormal. The scale contains items that index extrasensory perception (ESP), psychokinesis (PK), and life after death (LAD). Although, research employs the ASGS as both a general (unidimensional) and factorial (multidimensional) measure, few studies have examined the appropriateness of these solutions. Accordingly, the present paper tested the psychometric integrity of the ASGS via two studies. Study 1 assessed ASGS factorial structure using confirmatory factor analysis. To achieve this, merging of ASGS data from previously published studies and ongoing work created a heterogeneous sample of 1,601 responses…

Modelling the Tactical Behaviour of the Australian Population in a Bushfire

2015

This paper is concerned with the development of an agent-based model of population behaviour during a bushfire, to form the basis of a simulator that will be used as a decision-support tool for emergency managers. To ensure the validity of the simulation results, it is essential that the model, and the underlying agent architecture, are as realistic as possible. After providing some context about recent bushfires in Victoria, Australia, we justify the need for a BDI (belief, desire, intention) agent architecture. Although some tools exist to support the integration of such agents in simulations, they are infrequently used. We therefore show how an existing methodology for modelling military…

Le origini dell’emigrazione dalle Isole Eolie

2015

Evidence-Based Policy and Mixed Economy in Australia

2008

This paper examines the nature of evidence-based policy and explains how the ethic can be applied to improve the position of the firm in the mixed economy. Government participates in the mixed economy in several imposing ways. Indeed, government is very much the ‘elephant in the marketplace’ to be understood and effectively managed by the firm. However, the firm can better its position by consistently applying an evidenced-based approach when dealing with government. Evidencebased policy practitioners purport to rely upon the empirical and ‘scientific’ rather than a priori arguments for policy setting. Where evidence is available, this should form the basis of petitioning government. If not…

Phylogeny, biogeography and evolution of Triglochin L. (Juncaginaceae) – Morphological diversification is linked to habitat shifts rather than to gen…

2015

A species-level phylogeny is presented for Triglochin, the largest genus of Juncaginaceae (Alismatales) comprising about 30 species of annual and perennial herbs. Triglochin has an almost cosmopolitan distribution with Australia as centre of species diversity. Trans-Atlantic and trans-African disjunctions exist in the genus. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted based on molecular data obtained from nuclear (ITS, internal transcribed spacer) and chloroplast sequence data (psbA-trnH spacer, matK gene). Based on the phylogeny of the group divergence times were estimated and ancestral distribution areas reconstructed. Our data confirm the monophyly of Triglochin and resolve relationships betwee…

The Cost of Higher Education: Lessons from the Australian Context for Finland

2015

Degree programs in Finland are free for international students – for now. In the Australian system, however, massive tuition fees for international students have been linked to plagiarism and other forms of academic misconduct. This article examines the impact on education when universities become businesses. nonPeerReviewed
