Nondeterministic Moore Automata and Brzozowski’s Algorithm

2011

Moore automata represent a model that has many applications. In this paper we define a notion of coherent nondeterministic Moore automaton (NMA) and show that such a model has the same computational power of the classical deterministic Moore automaton. We consider also the problem of constructing the minimal deterministic Moore automaton equivalent to a given NMA. In this paper we propose an algorithm that is a variant of Brzozowski's algorithm in the sense that it is essentially structured as reverse operation and subset construction performed twice.

On Extremal Cases of Hopcroft’s Algorithm

2009

In this paper we consider the problem of minimization of deterministic finite automata (DFA) with reference to Hopcroft’s algorithm. Hopcroft’s algorithm has several degrees of freedom, so there can exist different sequences of refinements of the set of the states that lead to the final partition. We find an infinite family of binary automata for which such a process is unique. Some recent papers (cf. [3,7,1]) have been devoted to find families of automata for which Hopcroft’s algorithm has its worst execution time. They are unary automata associated to circular words. However, automata minimization can be achieved also in linear time when the alphabet has only one letter (cf. [14]), so in …

Size of Quantum Finite State Transducers

2007

Sizes of quantum and deterministic finite state transducers are compared in the case when both quantum and deterministic finite state transducers exist. The difference in size may be exponential.

Graph Connectivity, Monadic NP and built-in relations of moderate degree

1995

It has been conjectured [FSV93] that an existential secondoder formula, in which the second-order quantification is restricted to unary relations (i.e. a Monadic NP formula), cannot express Graph Connectivity even in the presence of arbitrary built-in relations.

Theory of tailor automata

2019

Abstract In the paper, a fragment of the new theory of tailor automata is presented, within which a deterministic finite automaton was defined. The proposed automaton provides a theoretical model of an informally characterized biomolecular automaton. The idea of working of which is founded on the concept of alternating cut of some double-stranded fragments of DNA, with the use of a restriction enzyme and ligations of some double-stranded fragments of DNA, with the use of the ligase enzyme.

Distributed Learning Automata-based S-learning scheme for classification

2019

This paper proposes a novel classifier based on the theory of Learning Automata (LA), reckoned to as PolyLA. The essence of our scheme is to search for a separator in the feature space by imposing an LA-based random walk in a grid system. To each node in the grid, we attach an LA whose actions are the choices of the edges forming a separator. The walk is self-enclosing, and a new random walk is started whenever the walker returns to the starting node forming a closed classification path yielding a many-edged polygon. In our approach, the different LA attached to the different nodes search for a polygon that best encircles and separates each class. Based on the obtained polygons, we perform …

Inducing the Lyndon Array

2019

In this paper we propose a variant of the induced suffix sorting algorithm by Nong (TOIS, 2013) that computes simultaneously the Lyndon array and the suffix array of a text in $O(n)$ time using $\sigma + O(1)$ words of working space, where $n$ is the length of the text and $\sigma$ is the alphabet size. Our result improves the previous best space requirement for linear time computation of the Lyndon array. In fact, all the known linear algorithms for Lyndon array computation use suffix sorting as a preprocessing step and use $O(n)$ words of working space in addition to the Lyndon array and suffix array. Experimental results with real and synthetic datasets show that our algorithm is not onl…

Extending the Tsetlin Machine With Integer-Weighted Clauses for Increased Interpretability

2020

Despite significant effort, building models that are both interpretable and accurate is an unresolved challenge for many pattern recognition problems. In general, rule-based and linear models lack accuracy, while deep learning interpretability is based on rough approximations of the underlying inference. Using a linear combination of conjunctive clauses in propositional logic, Tsetlin Machines (TMs) have shown competitive performance on diverse benchmarks. However, to do so, many clauses are needed, which impacts interpretability. Here, we address the accuracy-interpretability challenge in machine learning by equipping the TM clauses with integer weights. The resulting Integer Weighted TM (…

Novel Results on the Number of Runs of the Burrows-Wheeler-Transform

2021

The Burrows-Wheeler-Transform (BWT), a reversible string transformation, is one of the fundamental components of many current data structures in string processing. It is central in data compression, as well as in efficient query algorithms for sequence data, such as webpages, genomic and other biological sequences, or indeed any textual data. The BWT lends itself well to compression because its number of equal-letter-runs (usually referred to as $r$) is often considerably lower than that of the original string; in particular, it is well suited for strings with many repeated factors. In fact, much attention has been paid to the $r$ parameter as measure of repetitiveness, especially to evalua…
