Urban Circular Metabolism as a Generator of Value and Resilient Communities. Creative Recycling of Industrial Architecture: The Case of Nordkraft (Aa…

2022

Aalborg has modified its urban metabolism to overcome the economic-industrial crisis and tackle climate change. The city, however, has not changed its DNA. Without distorting its identity as an industrial city, it has been able to respond to new and unpredictable needs through a process of architectural and urban exaptation. Nordktraft is a significant part of this regeneration process based on sustainability, both from an environmental and socio-cultural point of view, with a vision that is particularly focused on physical health and the growth of the relational life of the population. The vision that inspired the Nordkraft project is that diversity is the most powerful factor fueling resi…

The Rewilding Approach in Urban Design. The Case Study of Budolfi Plads in the Historic Centre of Aalborg (DK)

2023

Dwelling on Earth responsibly means guaranteeing global environmental well-being, within which the habitable environment for human beings must find a new homeostasis. At the turn of the second and third millennium, tackling environmental degradation and halting the continued loss of biodiversity became a global policy goal. In this context, new approaches to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration are emerging, such as rewilding, an approach that aims to strengthen the adaptive capacity of ecosystems by restoring natural processes and minimizing human management. The article analyses urban rewilding as a design approach aimed at restoring natural processes and reintroducing natu…

Planning and Public Health. Nordkraft Regeneration as a Center of Culture and Health

2021

More than half of the world's population currently lives in cities, and urban health problems have worsened. In cities, there are serious risk factors for health and the spread of diseases, such as COVID-19 whose major epicentres have been in urban settlements. To guarantee public health, urban environments must be remodelled on the basis of new urban planning principles, in a holistic vision with integrated social and health-related aspects. Indeed, public health in urban habitats is not just about increasing life expectancy but also about improving the quality of life itself. Consequently, urban environments must offer not only health services but also social opportunities to individuals,…

Health as an Institutional Commitment. Reconversion of Nordkraft from a Power Station to a Cultural and Health Center

2021

The goal of public health prevention is not only to increase life expectancy, but also to improve the quality of life. It is therefore necessary to highlight the importance of the social opportunities available to the individual, that is, the ability to build relationships, cultivate interests, attend cultural events and lead a healthy lifestyle. Urban habitats, the main environments for socializing but also for spreading contagion (as the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted), must be remodelled to ensure public health. To achieve this goal, urban habitats must also be able to offer spaces for safe relationships to promote sociability and stimulate civic activism. The paper refers to the commitme…

Kotkan kaupungin ilmasto- ja energiatyö suhteessa Aalborgin sitoumuksiin

2013

Haastattelut on toteutettu avoimina haastatteluina pohjaten Aalborgin sitoumuksiin. Aineistojen analyyseissa on käytetty sisällönanalyysia.

Alvar Aallon museosuunnitelmat 1928-1958

2015

Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan Alvar Aallon vuosien 1928 – 1958 välillä suunnittelemia museorakennuksia käyttäen apuna historiallis-vertailevaa metodia. Tavoitteena on ollut aikaisemmista tutkimuksista poiketen koota yhteen Aallon museosuunnitelmien kolme ensimmäistä vuosikymmentä aikaisempaa laajemmin. Myöhäisempi tuotanto on rajattu pois aineiston laajuuden vuoksi. Tutkimuksessa käsiteltyjä museosuunnitelmia ovat Perniön museo (1928–29), Tallinnan taidemuseo (1936–37), Johnson-konsernin Vuoriteollisuus- ja Merenkulkumuseot Ruotsin Avestaan (1944), Bagdadin taidemuseo (1957–58), Keski-Suomen museo Jyväskylässä (1957–61) ja Aalborgin taidemuseo (1957–58, rakennettiin 1968–72). Näistä kaksi vii…
