Inability of HDL from abdominally obese subjects to counteract the inhibitory effect of oxidized LDL on vasorelaxation.

Abdominal obesity is associated with a decreased plasma concentration of HDL cholesterol and with qualitative modifications of HDL, such as triglyceride enrichment. Our aim was to determine, in isolated aorta rings, whether HDL from obese subjects can counteract the inhibitory effect of oxidized low density lipoprotein (OxLDL) on endothelium-dependent vasodilation as efficiently as HDL from normolipidemic, lean subjects. Plasma triglycerides were 74% higher (P < 0.005) in obese subjects compared with controls, and apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) and HDL cholesterol concentrations were 12% and 17% lower (P < 0.05), respectively. Maximal Strength, Muscular Endurance and Inflammatory Biomarkers in Young Adult Men

The aim was to study associations of maximal strength and muscular endurance with inflammatory biomarkers independent of cardiorespiratory fitness in those with and without abdominal obesity. 686 young healthy men participated (25±5 years). Involvement of insulin resistance in normoglycaemic obese patients with periodontitis: A cross-sectional study

Aim We explored the association between obesity and periodontitis with the aim of determining the possible role of insulin resistance (IR) in this relationship. Materials and Methods A total of 212 subjects –110 obese and 102 lean individuals– were evaluated for periodontal disease and divided according to IR: a lean group without IR (LWIR); an obese group without IR (OWIR); and an obese group with IR (OIR). Homocysteine levels and the metabolic syndrome in a Mediterranean population: A case-control study

However, whether there is a link between MS or its components and homocysteine levels in a population without cardiovascular disease is not well established. Erythrocyte deformability in morbid obesity before bariatric surgery. Influence of abdominal obesity.

Although there are several studies dealing with erythrocyte deformability (ED) in obese patients, research on this topic in morbidly obese subjects is scarce. In these studies ED seems to be decreased, although the cause remains unknown. A case-control study in 76 morbid obese subjects (23 women and 53 men, aged 44 ± 13 years) and in 79 normal-weight controls (30 women and 49 men, aged 43 ± 13 years) was undertaken. Are abdominal obesity and body mass index independent predictors of hemorheological parameters?

There is an association between obesity and rheological blood behavior [2, 4–7]. In this sense we have read with interest the recently published article by Brun et al. [1] in this journal.
