Determination of the absolute configuration of (−)-abietic acidviaits (4R,5R,9R,10R)-7,13-abietadien-18-ylp-bromobenzoate derivative
2006
The absolute configuration of the title bromo derivative of abietic acid, C27H35BrO2, has been determined. The structural analysis confirms the absolute stereochemistry for (−)-abietic acid proposed by Bose & Struck [(1959). Chem. Ind. (London), pp. 1628–1630] on the basis of optical rotatory dispersion measurements. The molecule exhibits a trans anti 6/6/6 tricyclic hydrocarbon skeleton, with the cyclohexane ring in the expected chair form and the two cyclohexene rings, the double bonds of which are conjugated, in half-chair conformations.
Synthesis of (+)-podocarp-8(14)-en-13-one and methyl-(+)-13-oxo-podocarp-8(14)-en-18-oate from abietic acid
1985
Abstract An efficient method for the preparation of (+)-podocarp-8(14)-en-13-one 6 and methyl-(+)-13-oxo-podocarp-8(14)-en-18-oate 8 from abietic acid is described.
Wood-derived estrogens: studies in vitro with breast cancer cell lines and in vivo in trout.
1996
The wood-derived compound, beta-sitosterol (purity > 90%), was shown to be estrogenic in fish. It induced the expression of the vitellogenin gene in the liver of juvenile and methyltestosterone-treated rainbow trout. Structural similarities to beta-sitosterol notwithstanding, cholesterol, citrostadienol, beta-sitostanol, and 5-androstene-3 beta,17 beta-diol, an estrogenic member of the androstenic steroid group, were inactive. An abietic acid mixture (37% abietic acid, 6% dehydroabietic acid, and a remainder of unknown compounds) showed slight hormonal activity in feed, but it was completely inactive when given intraperitoneally in implants. The estrogenic component of the abietic acid prep…
Phytochemical investigation of the needles of Abies nebrodensis (Lojac.) Mattei
2019
Abies nebrodensis (Lojac.) Mattei (Pinaceae) is a species living in a very small population only in a confined area of Sicily. In this study, the dichloromethane extract of the leaves was analyzed. Apart from three already known metabolites namely dehydroabietic acid; maltol; and rheosmin, previously detected in other species of Abies, a lanostane derivative was isolated. Its chemical structure was elucidated by means of extensive spectroscopic methods.
