Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) are very interesting materials for applications in the automotive and aerospace fields, since they combine the lightness of Aluminium with the strength of the ceramic reinforcement. These materials are very difficult to join and conventional welding techniques are not applicable, whereas solid-state welding techniques, like Friction Stir Welding (FSW), could be a solution. However very hard tool materials will need to be chosen in order to overcome the problem of heavy abrasive tool wear. Adhesive joining of Aluminum AA6082: the effect of resin and surface treatment

Abstract In this work the effects of both the substrate surface condition and the adhesive properties on single-lap aluminium joint resistance were analysed. The aluminium sheets were mechanically treated with two abrasive surfaces evaluating the induced roughness; four different resins were used in adhesion tests. Moreover, wettability tests were performed in order to evaluate the effect of the above-mentioned parameters on the substrate/adhesive interaction. A design of experiments was defined in order to quantify the effect of the considered factors and their correlation.

Surface and interface analysis of worn TiN (PVD) coated cold forging tools

Abstract Wear of cold forging tools, improved by TiN (PVD) hard coating and used in the production of alternator and starter components in the car industry, has been studied in detail. The most complicated case was the tool that produced a clutch housing of high precision. The 630 kN press process (50 pcs min −1 ) caused heavy adhesive and abrasive wear due to material flow, high surface pressure and also wear in the direction of tool movement. Effects of various hygiene procedures on the surface characteristics of titanium abutments.

The use of cleaning instruments on titanium implants may cause undesired surface alterations. In a qualitative and quantitative assessment of these alterations, 5 titanium implant abutments were treated with a steel curet, a prototype pure titanium curet, an air abrasive polishing system, and an ultrasonic system. Custom-made polymer templates, used to secure the curet to a vertical guide bar and a spring scale to maintain a constant instrument pressure, guaranteed a standardized procedure and reproducible results. Correlation between alteration of enamel roughness and tooth color

Background To establish the correlation between enamel roughness and color change of tooth. Material and Methods Enamel/dentin blocks (5 x 5 x 3.2 mm) were serially ground with the following abrasive paper: 1200-grit, 800-grit, and 600-grit SiC papers. In the paired model, the analyses of color (L*, a*, b*, ΔE) and roughness (Ra) were performed among the sandpaper exposure. Effect of diode laser irradiation on root surfaces in vitro.

The objective of this study was to evaluate possible morphological alterations of root surfaces after GaAlAs-diode laser (809 nm) irradiation under standardized in vitro conditions.Root specimens obtained from extracted periodontally diseased teeth were scaled and root planed with curettes followed by air-powder abrasive treatment prior to lasing. A tooth whitening and chemical abrasive protocol for the treatment of developmental enamel defects

Abstract This clinical report describes a chemical abrasive protocol and whitening techniques to quantify modifications to the color and volume produced when eliminating white spots associated with developmental defects in enamel. Chemical (oxidative-erosive) abrasive treatment (whitening + 6.6% hydrochloric acid) resolves white spots up to a depth of 0.2 mm. At greater depths, infiltration with 16% hydrochloric acid followed by composite resin infiltration is recommended.

Effect of a physical pre-treatment and drying on carotenoids of goji berries ( Lycium barbarum L.)

In order to evaluate the influence of an abrasive pre-treatment and drying at 50 °C, 60 °C, 70 °C of goji fruits (Lycium barbarum L.), changes in colour and carotenoids were studied. An extraction method was modified and adapted to assay the main carotenoid esters and saponified carotenoids of goji berries, before and after treatments. Goji berries were confirmed as a high source of zeaxanthin, with zeaxanthin-dipalmitate at about 2 g/kg dry weight. The reliability of the analytical method was confirmed by the high quantitative recoveries, about 100%, a higher repeatability than reference methods and a good reproducibility (lower than 5%). Electrochemical identification of flavonoid dyes in solid work of art samples by abrasive voltammetry at paraffin-impregnated graphite electrodes.

Quantitation of Metal Ions in Archaeological Glass by Abrasive Stripping Square-Wave Voltammetry Using Graphite/Polyester Composite Electrodes

A method for identifying Co, Cu, Sb, Sn, Fe, Zn, and Zr pigments in glasses using square-wave voltammetry as the detection mode is described. It is based on the abrasive attachment of glass microsamples to graphite/polyester composite electrodes. Sample amounts less than 1 μg are used allowing for the study of archaeological samples. In all cases well-defined anodic stripping peaks corresponding to the oxidation of metal deposits generated at potentials ranging from −0.6 to −1.6 V (vs. SCE) are obtained.
