Serological biomarkers for the diagnosis of Mycobacterium abscessus infections in cystic fibrosis patients
2021
International audience; Background: Culture conditions sometimes make it difficult to detect non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), particularly Mycobacterium abscessus, an emerging cystic fibrosis (CF) pathogen. The diagnosis of NTM positive cases not detected by classical culture methods might benefit from the development of a serological assay. Methods: As part of a diagnostic accuracy study, a total of 173 sera CF-patients, including 33 patients with M. abscessus positive cultures, and 31 non-CF healthy controls (HC) were evaluated. Four M. abscessus antigens were used separately, comprising two surface extracts (Interphase (INP) and a TLR2 positive extract (TLR2eF)) and two recombinant pro…
Successful treatment of KPC-3 Klebsiella Pneumoniae ST258 clone with a combination of high-dose tigecycline and colistin in ICU: a case series report.
2011
INFECTIONS CAUSED BY KLEBSIELLA PNEUMONIAE SEQUENCE TYPE 258 PRODUCING K. PNEUMONIAE CARBAPENEMASE 3 (KPC-Kp)HAVE WIDELY EMERGED AND BOTH INDIVIDUAL CASES AND OUTBREAKS OF COLONIZATION OR INFECTION HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN PALERMO, ITALY.OBIETTIVO: THIS IS A RETROSPECTIVE CASE SERIES THAT DESCRIBES THE CLINICAL AND MICROBIOLOGIC OUTCOMES OF 16 PATIENTS WHO RECEIVED A COMBINATION OF HIGH-DOSE TIGECYCLINE AND COLISTIN FOR TREATMENT OF VAP (4 CASES) AND SEVERE BACTERAEMIA (12 CASES) DURING THE YEARS 2009-2011. 11 OUT OF THE 16 CASES WERE POST SURGICAL PATIENTS WITH INTRABDOMINAL ABSCESSES DUE TO KPC-Kp. IN 5 CASES COMBINED KPC-Kp AND CARBAPENEM-RESISTANT ACINETOBACTER BAUMANNII INFECTION WAS ALSO…

Treatment algorithm for spontaneous spinal infections: A review of the literature
2019
Background: Primary spinal infections are rare pathologies with an estimated incidence of 5% of all osteomyelitis. The diagnosis can be challenging and this might result in a late identification. The etiological diagnosis is the primary concern to determine the most appropriate treatment. The aim of this review article was to identify the importance of a methodological attitude toward accurate and prompt diagnosis using an algorithm to aid on spinal infection management. Methods: A search was done on spinal infection in some databases including PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge, Google Scholar, Ebsco, Embasco, and Scopus. Results: Literature reveals that on the basis of a clinical suspicion, the…
Multiple odontogenic abscesses. Thoracic and abdomino-perineal extensión in an immuno competent patient
2010
Introduction: Odontogenic infection (OI) may lead to death if it extends beyond the buccal area. The virulence of pathogens and the local and systemic status of the patient influence the propagation of the pathogen, either by anatomical continuity or haemematogenous dissemination. Several severe complications derived from OI have been reported in the head, neck and chest. However, OI with an abdominal component, caused by bacteraemia with dental foci or the direct passage of pus from the thorax to the abdomen, are unusual. Case report: We present the case of a young immunocompetent woman who, after false cure of an odontogenic abscess, again reported gynaecological symptoms. A network of co…
The association between appendicitis severity and patient age with appendiceal neoplasm histology—a population-based study
2022
Abstract Purpose Recent studies have reported alarming appendiceal tumor rates associated with complicated acute appendicitis, especially in patients presenting with a periappendicular abscess. However, the data on histology of appendiceal tumors among acute appendicitis patients is limited, especially in patient cohorts differentiating between uncomplicated and complicated acute appendicitis. We have previously reported the association of increased appendiceal tumor prevalence with complicated acute appendicitis in this population-based study. The objective of this secondary analysis was to evaluate the association of both appendicitis severity and patient age with appendiceal tumor histol…
Tratamiento de la infección periamigdalina
2006
Management of odontogenic infection of pulpal and periodontal origin
2007
The dental biofilm is a complex bacterial ecosystem that undergoes evolution, maturing and development, and thus leads to odontogenic infection. The infection is normally located in the tissues of the dental organ itself, and follows a chronic course of evolution. However, bacterial pathogens express virulence factors in the biofilm, and this together with changes in host immunity, may cause clinical exacerbations and spread of infection to other areas of the body. Odontogenic infection management should take into consideration the fact that therapeutic success lies in the control of the infectious aetiologic agent, using mechanical-surgical debridement and/or antimicrobial therapy. Debride…

Hirnabsze durch fehlerhafte Crutchfield-Zange
1973
