Effects of ethylene and of 'anti-ethylene' compounds on the floral pedicel abscission zone in grapevines were analysed via a laboratory model consisting of isolated flowers held in Petri dishes. Our model permitted precise determination of abscission and enabled us to test a range of physiologically-active compounds including ethylene precursors, and antagonists of ethylene action. For example, a precursor of ethylene, 1-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylic acid, had the same effect as ethylene in promoting abscission. Conversely, an inhibition of ethylene action by silver thiosulfate or an inhibition of ethylene synthesis by amino-oxyacetic acid both strongly inhibited abscission zone function. …

Sustainability of pistachio production (Pistacia vera L.) under supplemental irrigation in a Mediterranean climate

Abstract The objective of this study was to examine the effects of supplemental micro-irrigation, in a commercial rainfed orchard, on tree water status, gas exchange and productivity of Pistacia vera L. (cv Bianca) grafted on P. terebinthus. Irrigating with 10–15% of estimated full evaporative demand significantly increased average annual productivity by increasing yield in the on-crop year of this alternate bearing species. Irrigation increased yield by 30%, resulting in 1600 kg of in-shell product per ha. Irrigation delayed leaf senescence while flower bud abscission was not reduced until the third year of experiment. Investigations on the content indole-3-acetic spruce needles of healthy and damaged trees of various sites

Summary Surveys were made on the concentration of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in spruce trees of various sites. The concentrations of the hormone were specified with a radioimmunoassay after the needle extract had been purified in several steps. The content of IAA in needles of damaged trees was distinctly lower than the content in needles of healthy trees. Another feature was the annual rythm of the IAA content with the maximum of concentration in June. A distinct diurnal course with highest level of concentration during the early afternoon hours was also observed. The diurnal rhythm of the damaged trees was clearly lower. RNA-Seq analysis to investigate alternate bearing mechanism in Pistacia vera L

Pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) production suffers a high level of alternate bearing. The mechanism underlying this negative phenomenon is different from other species, such as apple and olive. Pistachio produces a high number of inflorescence buds every year that in heavy cropping trees (“ON”) mostly fall during the kernel development phase, which occurs in July-August. Carbon sequestration potential of Italian orchards and vineyards

From 2004 to 2012 carbon (C) fluxes between the soil-vegetation system and the atmosphere in apple, grape, olive and orange orchards planted in different Italian regions were measured. Above-ground net primary productivity (ANPP) ranged from 4 (olive) to 9 (apple) Mg C ha-1. Alley grass contribution to total ANPP significantly varied among the systems, reaching a maximum of 60% in vineyards. The harvest index ranged from 46% for apple, to 58% for orange, 60% for grape and 41% for olive, while abscised leaves accounted for 30% of ANPP, on average. Water relations and carbohydrate partitioning of four greenhouse-grown olive genotypes under long-term drought

The four olive genotypes exhibited different responses to drought involving leaf drop and g s reductions (broad-leaved genotypes, good leaf hydration); or growth reductions (narrow-leaved genotypes, dehydration tolerance).
