A genetic algorithm for scratch removal in static images

2002

This paper investigates the removal of line scratches from old moving pictures and gives a twofold contribution. First, it presents a simple technique for detecting the scratches, based on an analysis of the statistics of the grey levels. Second, the scratch removal is approached as an optimisation problem, which is solved by using a genetic algorithm. The method can be classified as a static approach, as it works independently on each single frame of the sequence. It does not require any a-priori knowledge of the absolute position of the scratch, nor an external starting population of chromosomes for the genetic algorithm. The central column of the line scratch once detected is changed wit…

Hydrolase–like catalysis and structural resolution of natural products by a metal–organic framework

2020

[EN] The exact chemical structure of non-crystallising natural products is still one of the main challenges in Natural Sciences. Despite tremendous advances in total synthesis, the absolute structural determination of a myriad of natural products with very sensitive chemical functionalities remains undone. Here, we show that a metal-organic framework (MOF) with alcohol-containing arms and adsorbed water, enables selective hydrolysis of glycosyl bonds, supramolecular order with the so-formed chiral fragments and absolute determination of the organic structure by single-crystal X-ray crystallography in a single operation. This combined strategy based on a biomimetic, cheap, robust and multigr…

The arid–humid transition in the Sahara and the Sahel during the last deglaciation

1990

At the time of the Last Glacial Maximum, the Sahara and Sahel regions of North Africa were extremely dry. New records of rainfall show that during the subsequent deglaciation, the transition from arid to humid conditions in these regions occurred synchronously in two main steps. Comparison with other records of palaeoclimate in Europe and the North Atlantic Ocean shows that certain common factors controlled changes in ocean and atmosphere dynamics during the deglaciation.

New potent antibacterials against Gram-positive multiresistant pathogens: effects of side chain modification and chirality in linezolid-like 1,2,4-ox…

2014

The effects of side chain modification and chirality in linezolid-like 1,2,4-oxadiazoles have been studied to design new potent antibacterials against Gram-positive multidrug-resistant pathogens. The adopted strategy involved a molecular modelling approach, the synthesis and biological evaluation of new designed compounds, enantiomers separation and absolute configuration assignment. Experimental determination of the antibacterial activity of the designed (S)-1-((3-(4-(3-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5- yl)phenyl)-oxazolidin-2-one-5-yl)methyl)-3-methylthiourea and (S)-1-((3-(3-fluoro-4-(3-methyl-1,2,4- oxadiazol-5-yl)phenyl)-oxazolidin-2-one-5-yl)methyl)-3-methylthiourea against multidrug resistan…

Nuclear Quadrupole Moment of 119Sn

2008

Second-order scalar-relativistic Douglas-Kroll-Hess density functional calculations of the electric field gradient, including an analytic correction of the picture change error, were performed for 34 tin compounds of which molecular structures and Sn-119 Mossbauer spectroscopy parameters are experimentally known. The components of the diagonalized electric field gradient tensor, V-xx,V-yy, V-zz, were used to determine the quantity V, which is proportional to the nuclear quadrupole splitting parameter Delta E. The slope of the linear correlation plot of the experimentally determined Delta E parameter versus the corresponding calculated V data allowed us to obtain an absolute value of the nuc…

Higher order Peregrine breathers solutions to the NLS equation

2015

The solutions to the one dimensional focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) can be written as a product of an exponential depending on t by a quotient of two polynomials of degree N (N + 1) in x and t. These solutions depend on 2N − 2 parameters : when all these parameters are equal to 0, we obtain the famous Peregrine breathers which we call PN breathers. Between all quasi-rational solutions of the rank N fixed by the condition that its absolute value tends to 1 at infinity and its highest maximum is located at the point (x = 0, t = 0), the PN breather is distinguished by the fact that PN (0, 0) = 2N + 1. We construct Peregrine breathers of the rank N explicitly for N ≤ 11. We give …

ChemInform Abstract: Total Synthesis of (+)-Phenguignardic Acid, a Phytotoxic Metabolite of Guignardia bidwellii

2014

(+)-Phenguignardic acid, a phytotoxic metabolite of the grape black rot fungus Guignardia bidwellii was synthesized, as well as its enantiomer, in eight steps from (R)-phenyllactic acid and 3-phenylprop-2-yn-1-ol. The formation of the carboxylate at a late stage, to avoid enolization of the precursor used in the central acetalization step, proved to be crucial. The synthesis of the natural product allowed the unabiguous assignment of its hitherto unknown absolute configuration.

Model-Based Transfer Entropy Analysis of Brain-Body Interactions with Penalized regression techniques

2020

The human body can be seen as a functional network depicting the dynamical interactions between different organ systems. This exchange of information is often evaluated with information-theoretic approaches which comprise the use of vector autoregressive (VAR) and state space (SS) models, normally identified with the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). However, the number of time series to be included in the model is strictly related to the length of data recorded thus limiting the use of the classical approach. In this work, a new method based on penalized regressions, the so-called LASSO, was compared with OLS on physiological time-series extracted from 18 subjects during different stress condi…

The Lr-Variational Integral

2022

AbstractWe define the $$L^r$$ L r -variational integral and we prove that it is equivalent to the $$HK_r$$ H K r -integral defined in 2004 by P. Musial and Y. Sagher in the Studia Mathematica paper The$$L^{r}$$ L r -Henstock–Kurzweil integral. We prove also the continuity of $$L^r$$ L r -variation function.
