Abstract In this paper, excitonic properties of crystalline and glassy SiO 2 are reviewed. Experimental spectroscopic data (optical absorption and reflection spectra, as well as spectra of luminescence and its excitation), luminescence decay kinetics at different temperatures, and photoelectric properties — photoconductivity and photoelectron emission — were used to determine excitons in SiO 2 . Information on migration of excitons was obtained on the basis of energy transport to impurity luminescence centers, the latter being detectors of quasiparticles. Electronic structure and optical, mechanical, and transport properties of the pure, electron-doped, and hole-doped Heusler compound CoTiSb

The Heusler compound CoTiSb was synthesized and investigated theoretically and experimentally with respect to electronic structure and optical, mechanical, and vibrational properties. The optical properties were investigated in a wide spectral range from 10 meV to 6.5 eV and compared with ab initio calculations. The optical spectra confirm the semiconducting nature of CoTiSb, with a strong exciton absorption at 1.83 eV. The calculated phonon dispersion as well as elastic constants verify the mechanical stability of CoTiSb in the cubic $C{1}_{b}$ system. Temperature dependence of x-ray absorption spectra in the ferromagnetic Heusler alloysMn2VAlandCo2FeAl

We investigate the temperature dependence of the spin-resolved unoccupied density of states (DOS) in ferromagnetic ${\text{Co}}_{2}\text{FeAl}$ and ferrimagnetic ${\text{Mn}}_{2}\text{VAl}$ epitaxial films on MgO(100) using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. We observe an unexpected strong temperature dependence of the DOS beyond the change expected from the Fermi distribution function. An increase in spectral weight is observed for majority states below the Fermi energy in the case of ${\text{Mn}}_{2}\text{VAl}$ and for minority states above the Fermi energy in the case of ${\text{Co}}_{2}\text{FeAl}$. Effect of annealing on Co2FeAl0.5Si0.5thin films: A magneto-optical and x-ray absorption study

A series of Al and MgO-capped Co${}_{2}$FeAl${}_{0.5}$Si${}_{0.5}$ epitaxial thin films grown on MgO with various levels of L2${}_{1}$ ordering was obtained by in situ annealing. The films were studied by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), magneto-optical Kerr effect magnetometry, and Brillouin light scattering. We find the anisotropy constants decrease, while the spin wave stiffness increases as the samples are annealed to higher temperatures. The magnetization as determined by Brillouin light scattering reveals a maximum value at intermediate annealing temperatures. Resonant Raman characterization of InAlGaN/GaN heterostructures

InAlGaN/GaN heterostructures and thin films with In composition ranging from 0.03 to 0.1 are characterized by means of Raman scattering excited at various energies in the ultra violet range, tuning the laser excitation energy through the band gap of In x Al y Ga 1-x-y N. It is shown that the addition of In to the Al y Ga 1-y N alloy diminishes considerably the vibration energy of the A 1 (LO) phonon mode. The phonon line is asymmetric on the low energy side, and the asymmetry increases with In content, while the main peak shifts to lower energies. A shift of the phonon energy has also been observed when the excitation energy is close to the absorption edge of the In x Al y Ga 1-x-y N layer.…
Optical properties of wurtzite and rock-salt ZnO under pressure

Abstract This paper reports on the pressure dependence of the optical absorption edge of ZnO in the wurtzite and rock-salt phase, up to 14 GPa. Both vapor-phase monocrystals and pulsed-laser-deposition thin films have been investigated. In both types of samples the wurtzite to rock-salt transition is observed at 9.7±0.2 GPa. The absorption tail of the fundamental gap, as measured in monocrystals, exhibits a pressure coefficient of 24.5±2 meV/GPa. The evolution under pressure of the full absorption edge of the wurtzite phase is studied with thin film samples, yielding a slightly lower pressure coefficient (23.0±0.5 meV/GPa for the A–B exciton). This work reports on the electronic and crystalline structure and the mechanical, magnetic, and transport properties of the polycrystalline Heusler compound Co${}_{2}$MnGe. The crystalline structure was examined in detail by extended x-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy and anomalous x-ray diffraction. The compound exhibits a well-ordered $L{2}_{1}$ structure as is typical for Heusler compounds with 2:1:1 stoichiometry. The low-temperature magnetic moment agrees well with the Slater-Pauling rule and indicates a half-metallic ferromagnetic state of the compound, as is predicted by ab initiocalculations. Phonon contribution to the absorption of ultrasound in amorphous solids at moderately low temperatures

Abstract Sound absorbtion in amorphous solids is considered to be due to the scattering of sound waves from the thermal phonons. It is shown that the dependence of the absorption coefficient on the temperature displays a maximum in the interval 10≲T≲100 K . The frequency dependence of the absorption coefficient is investigated. Numerical calculations for amorphous Mg and Zn illustrate the theoretical results.
Comparative study of illite clay and illite-based geopolymer products

Quaternary (Q-clay) clayey deposits are one of the dominating parts of mineral raw materials of the sedimentary cover at present area of Latvia. These clays can be characterised by illite content up to 75-80 %. Two ways for use of illite clays were studied: conventional and geopolymers method. Purpose of the second mentioned method was showing the influence of alkali (KOH) on the transformation of Q-clay/illite structure. A [Cr2Ni] coordination polymer: slow relaxation of magnetization in quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnetic chains

The reaction of [Cr3IIIO(OAc)6(H2O)3]NO3·AcOH with 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde, 2-amino-isobutyric acid and NiCl2·6H2O in MeOH, under basic and solvothermal conditions, led to the formation of the quasi-1D coordination polymer {[CrIII2NiII(L)4(MeOH)2]}n (where L = the dianion of the Schiff base between 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde and 2-amino-isobutyric acid), which behaves as a ferromagnetic chain, displaying slow relaxation of magnetization.
