Far infrared absorption by acoustic phonons in titanium dioxide nanopowders

2006

We report spectral features of far infrared electromagnetic radiation absorption in anatase TiO2 nanopowders which we attribute to absorption by acoustic phonon modes of nanoparticles. The frequency of peak excess absorption above the background level corresponds to the predicted frequency of the dipolar acoustic phonon from continuum elastic theory. The intensity of the absorption cannot be accounted for in a continuum elastic dielectric description of the nanoparticle material. Quantum mechanical scale dependent effects must be considered. The absorption cross section is estimated from a simple mechanical phenomenological model. The results are in plausible agreement with the absorption b…

Exciton-Phonon Coupling in the Ultraviolet Absorption and Emission Spectra of Bulk Hexagonal Boron Nitride

2018

We present an \textit{ab initio} method to calculate phonon-assisted absorption and emission spectra in the presence of strong excitonic effects. We apply the method to bulk hexagonal BN which has an indirect band gap and is known for its strong luminescence in the UV range. We first analyse the excitons at the wave vector $\overline{q}$ of the indirect gap. The coupling of these excitons with the various phonon modes at $\overline{q}$ is expressed in terms of a product of the mean square displacement of the atoms and the second derivative of the optical response function with respect to atomic displacement along the phonon eigenvectors. The derivatives are calculated numerically with a fin…

High-Pressure Softening of the Out-of-Plane A2u(Transverse-Optic) Mode of Hexagonal Boron Nitride Induced by Dynamical Buckling

2019

We investigate the highly anisotropic behavior of the in-plane and out-of-plane infrared-active phonons of hexagonal boron nitride by means of infrared reflectivity and absorption measurements under high pressure. Infrared reflectivity spectra at normal incidence on high-quality single crystals show strict fulfillment of selection rules and an unusually long E1u[transverse-optic (TO)] phonon lifetime. Accurate values of the dielectric constants at ambient pressure ϵ0= 6.96, ϵ∞= 4.95, ϵ 0= 3.37, and ϵ∞ = 2.84 have been determined from fits to the reflectivity spectra. The out-of-plane A2u phonon reflectivity band is revealed in measurements on an inclined facet, and absorption measurements a…

Si nanocrystals embedded in $SiO_2$: Optical studies in the vacuum ultraviolet range

2011

Photoluminescence excitation and transmission spectra of Si nanocrystals of different diameters embeddedin a SiO2 matrix have been investigated in the broad visible-vacuum ultraviolet spectral range usingsynchrotron radiation. The dependence of the photoluminescence excitation spectra on the nanocrystals sizewas experimentally established. It is shown that the photoluminescence excitation and absorption spectra aresignificantly blueshifted with decreasing Si nanocrystal size. A detailed comparison of photoluminescenceexcitation and absorption spectra with data from theoretical modeling has been done. It is demonstrated thatthe experimentally determined blueshift of the photoluminescence exc…

Luminescence of unfused 95%SiO2–5%GeO2 amorphous films with fluorine additive: No evidence for presence of GeODC(I) defects found

2013

Abstract Photoluminescence (PL) of unfused amorphous germanosilicate films with fluorine additive is studied in 2–8.5 eV spectral range. Experiments are based on films deposited on silica substrates by means of the surface-plasma chemical vapor deposition (SPCVD). Films of about 100 μm in thickness with “high F” (~ 4.2 wt.%) and “low F” (~ 0.5 wt.%) fluorine content have been fabricated for the experiments. KrF (248 nm), ArF (193 nm) and F2 (157 nm) excimer lasers are used to pump PL. It is found that absorption and luminescence associated with germanium oxygen deficient centers (GeODCs) in “high F” and “low F” films differ. In the “high F” unfused film absorption coefficient of the band at…

Optical properties of ZnMgO films grown by spray pyrolysis and their application to UV photodetection

2015

This work presents a comprehensive optical characterization of Zn1−xMgxO thin films grown by spray pyrolysis (SP). Absorption measurements show the high potential of this technique to tune the bandgap from 3.30 to 4.11 eV by changing the Mg acetate content in the precursor solution, leading to a change of the Mg-content ranging from 0 up to 35%, as measured by transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The optical emission of the films obtained by cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence spectroscopy shows a blue shift of the peak position from 3.26 to 3.89 eV with increasing Mg incorporation, with a clear excitonic contribution even at high Mg contents. The lin…

Optical absorption, luminescence, and ESR spectral properties of point defects in silica

2001

Publisher Summary This chapter is divided into two parts: (1) In the introductory part, it describes the problems of point defects in a-SiO2, and (2) in the second part it discusses the experimental results. This chapter focuses on the Oxygen-Deficient Centers (ODCs) species in silica. This chapter investigates the ODC defects in a-SiO2 through their optical absorption, photoluminescence, and electron spin resonance activities. The effects of γ-ray irradiation are also investigated to evidence their ability to generate or transform structural defects. The aim of this chapter is to understand the optical activity of such defects to help in the characterization of their structure. The propert…

Luminescence of Ce‐doped borate‐oxyfluoride glass ceramics

2007

In the present work we studied the possibility to obtain oxyfluoride glass ceramics based on a lithium and potassium borate glasses with addition of fluorides. Lithium-borate glasses without lanthanum fluoride are transparent up to 275 nm. In samples with LaF3 doped with Ce-activator, an additional absorption at about 300 nm and intense photoluminescence could be observed. Ce-doped potassium-borate glass with addition of fluorides LaF3, LiF and GdF3 was milky and not transparent, an intense photoluminescence has been observed, X-ray diffraction measurements showed a presence of well-pronounced crystalline phases of LiF as well as of GdBO3. Luminescence mechanisms of defective ZnO nanoparticles.

2016

ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by pulsed laser ablation (PLAL) of a zinc plate in deionized water were investigated by time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) and complementary techniques (TEM, AFM, μRaman). HRTEM images show that PLAL produces crystalline ZnO NPs in wurtzite structure with a slightly distorted lattice parameter a. Consistently, optical spectra show the typical absorption edge of wurtzite ZnO (Eg = 3.38 eV) and the related excitonic PL peaked at 3.32 eV with a subnanosecond lifetime. ZnO NPs display a further PL peaking at 2.2 eV related to defects, which shows a power law decay kinetics. Thermal annealing in O2 and in a He atmosphere produces a reduction of the A1(LO) Ra…

Structure and Phase Changes in Natural and Synthetic Magnesium Aluminum Spinel

2015

Natural spinel crystals from Ural and Pamir deposits and synthetic magnesium aluminium spinel single crystals with different stoichiometry (MgO.nAl2O3 ) grown by Verneuil method were used. The photoluminescence (PL), its excitation (PLE) and optical absorption of stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric magnesium aluminium spinel crystals containing the chromium and manganese ions and defects produced by fast neutron irradiation( fluence up to 1020cm-2, E>0.1 MeV) are investigated. The broadening of R- and N-lines takes place in synthetic stoichiometric spinel. Structure of synthetic nonstoichiometric spinels (n>1) has to be more disordered, since in addition to the site exchange …
